My friend (she's a nice person and all but god forbid if she has a pet) has a dog that she doesnt take care of at all!!! She doesnt know old it is, and what kind of breed it is! She has never taken it to the vet, poor thing. It hasnt had it's necessary shots for 3 yrs. like rabies and worms. She doesnt even brush it! She has never ever taken it for a walk (and she has had her for 3 yrs.!) she never brushes the dogs teeth, and when she washes her dog all she does is spray it with a hose! and the dog doesnt like it cause sometimes she sprays it in her eyes! She feeds the dog only human food! And the dog isnt even registered. My mom wont let me report her to the animal control what can I do???

but I am only 11, I dont really think I can do much damage or the animal control might not take me seriously!

not being registered means the dog is illegal and if anybody sees her (animal control) they can take the dog away. Oh and let me say her parents dont care for the dog, the dad threw a brick at the dog, it hit the dog on the foot, and there was nothing I could do about it

I would report her. Everything stays anonymous and neglect is abuse! if your friend cant take proper care of her dog, it should go to someone who can.

I don't know how old you are, so I hesitate on telling you to dognap it or go againt your Mother, but to tell you the truth that would be the best thing for your friends dog. Persoanlly, my in-law's dognapped a doberman that was being horribly neglected for some time and he now has a loving home with them. So, if keeping her dog as your own is not an option, do your research on local NO KILL rescue organizations and do your best to report your friend to the proper authorities behind your Mom's back. Your gut is telling you the right thing to do. Good luck and there should be more poeple out there like you that look out for those without a voice!

As long as the dog has food and water and shelter it doesn't matter dogs don't need a bath like humans and who brushes a dogs teeth but the shots and vet visits should be looked into tell your friend to take it to a close vet at least once.

Tell her that owning a pet is as much of a responsibility as having kids, & that animals need to see vets to stay healthy, have their teeth brushed, & be groomed regularly, etc, same as people do. Would she treat another human like she is treating this dog???

Tell her if she can't own up to the responsibilty of owning an animal, she needs to find it a home where it can at least get the proper nutrition for it!!

What does the dog not being registered have to do with anything?

Have you tried gentle suggestions? Simply starting a conversation about how important you think vaccinations are?

p.s. Unless your local animal control is a no kill facility, chances are the dog will end up euthanized.

First of all...Hmmm! Poor Dog is right, however I doubt that animal control would do much. I'd have a heart to heart with your friend. Tell her that the dog needs things like worm shots and such. Tick prevention, etc. My vet always told me that I let my dogs chew on bones and such that it was enough for them dental wise. (greenies)

Maybe you could suggest (gently) that she help her dog. And if it bothers you so much... brush the dog for her. Show her by example. But, just so you know, most dogs don't like baths.

Unless the dog is malnurished, there isnt much you really do at this point. Most cities and towns require you to yearly give your dog a rabies vaccination. if the dog were to bite someone it would be quarintined for at least 10 days. Best thing for you to do is try to talk to her.

OK first its really wrong! if you can go to a(alone or without mom) payphone booth and phone animal control and ask them to make it a anonymous call so your friend and mom wont know. If the dog is really that upset and mistreated get it away from her no animal and i mean no animal needs that in their lives

Have a talk with her and point out to her all of her mistakes, if that doesn't work get angry and tell her that if she doesn't start looking after her dog you will report her whether your mom likes it or not , no animal should be treated like that.

First talk to your friend. See if you can get her to either allow you to assist in caring for the dog, or convince her to give it to someone who will give it a good home.

If she refuse these two options talk to your mother again. Calmly explain the situation to her and see what she thinks.

If all else fails get a responsible adult to call animal control for you.
