u should never crate ur dog, if u don't have to time to train ur dog to be good in the house or not to paw u, don't get a dog. And when dogs drool, and pant it means they r to hot and need some water. If ur dog is pawing at its crate then it means that the dog doesn't like the crate and wants out.

pet her.talk to her in a soft calm quit voice.and say like its ok. and make sure that she always clean clear fresh cold water in her bowl at all times like before you leave the house.give her lots of atention but not to much atention.play with her a little more than you usely do.put an ice pack in where she sleeps before she has to go in that place.check her paws see how clean they are if they are not normal looking take your dog to the vet.in the car have her sit by someone.give her treats.be really nice to her.dont ignore her . be quiet for her . love her .

From your story, I think she may be getting a little stir crazy. You can't crate a dog EVERY time you're out....that's being way overprotective.
Try letting her have a "special room" instead.
And the Maltese can be a VERY neurotic animal in my experience...having owned 2.
