I have a 5 lb. Chihuahua who I have used a harness for for probably the last year or so. I left the harness on at all times because he made it so hard to get on him, that he would sometimes not make it outside to go potty and instead go on me while I was putting on the harness. I started noticing that his fur beneath the harness was damaged so I went back to using a collar... but the collar only chokes him. It seems neither method works well for me. I know his trachea is very delicate and I don't want to injure him by using a collar. But I also don't want him to be uncomfortable in his harness. What should I do? Can you buy softer harnesses that don't damage the fur and are more comfortable? If so, where?

I would HIGHLY recommend a puppia soft harness. I have 2 for my pug and they are fantastic.
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=puppia+harness&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&ebaytag1=ebayreg&srchdesc=n&maxRecordsReturned=300&maxRecordsPerPage=50&SortProperty=MetaEndSort
Ebay has the best prices on these that I found.
Here is an example of my pug wearing hers.

First, don't leave the harness on all the time. I have five chihuahuas, and I use harnesses on all of them. Collars, choke them, harnesses don't, and it's much more comfortable for the dog, and also easier to control the dog. The reason his fur was damaged, is probably because, the harness is too tight. You need to be able to fit 2 fingers, side by side, under the neck and body. They do have all kinds of harnesses to choose from. Go to your local pet store, and I'm sure you'll find one that you like. If you are unsure which one to buy, just ask on of the sales people and they will help you.

I have an approximately 8 year old male chihuahua and I alternate using both. When we are going to be walking for longer periods of time, I use a harness and other time a collar. I have read in numerous books, magazines, etc. that a harness is better for super small and larger dogs because it helps long-term with their posture. So, I went out and got a small harness and use that for daily walks. I do believe I have seen an improvement.

Put a pad or something on the harness or take him out side every 1 and a 1/2.

You shouldn't leave a harness or collar on all the time. A harness should be used and insteasd just take him out more often and as soon as he needs to go outside.

This is harness that is easier to put on your dog.
i have seen many different ones (i was groomer before) but this one is the easiest.
Leaving the collar or the harness on your dog is not a good idea.
I think you need to train your dog to stay still when you put it on him.
when he learns that harness is something good (like his favorite treat or a walk to the park) he should be fine.
Good Luck!

there are lots of different types on harnesses, some slip on easily, others are more complicated. i'd say load up with a bunch of treats, take the little guy to petco and try a bunch of harnesses on him. give him treats while trying things on so he doesn't get upset by it.

Just use a soft collar. You can make sure its not too tight by fitting 4 fingers in the collar after you put it on.
