Dogs - February 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Dogs

We have two dogs.
First, a five pound long haired Chihuahua.
Second, a 15-20 pound Aufen-Pinscher / smoothe hair Terrier mix

They're both young, but I think they're both beyond the puppy stage. I really don't want to wait around for the next "county veterinary open clinic" for a $3 shot that might make my dogs sick.

I'd like to take my dogs to a vet to get their shots. But before I drag them to the car, I'm curious as to how much I can be expecting to pay. Also, I don't know if I'd be required to have a series of appointments and blood tests first. In some states that"s required.

Since Delaware is a relatively beurocracy free place, I figure probably not. So, if you're from Delaware (I'm in Sussex County), and you have any experience with this, I'd really appreciate any help you could provide...

Also, if you can reccommend a decent vet in the Seaford / Georgetown area, that would be fantastic! I'd love to have a good starting point.

Thank You All For Your Time!

My lab-boxer is a year old (90 lbs) and in the last few months has taken to nursing. She will sit with a stuffed animal and suckle on it for hours. She evens kneads while doing it.

As far as I know she wasn't taken from her mom too early, she is fixed (was fixed by the City pound at 4 months - of which we had no control of, we adopted her after that!) and never displayed this behavior until after she'd hit a year old.

Can anyone offer advice as to why she may be doing it? Is this a healthy behavior, is it okay to let her continue or should we stop it?

My neighbor adopted a small terrior mix from the shelter. She probably weighs only 5lbs. She is thought to be between 10 and 14 years old. They are insisting she be neutered, but I am afraid it may kill her. She just had 7 teeth pulled a week ago. She is not roaming the streets, so theres not much chance she'll get pregnant. In fact, its much too cold for her to be outside and shes watched every moment. We are looking for a good argument against doing this, please help. Bud dog ())The shelter contends that it is the law.)

5 year old, in tact male great dane. He has always been very healthy... last checkup a few months ago. No medication or disease. This is the first time this has happened. Blood was bright red, but watery. It was quite a bit of watery blood... a couple of table spoons perhaps... but he is a great dane. I have read this may simply be his unsatified attraction to an in-heat female in the neighborhood - or- perhaps a bacterial infection. My fear is prostate cancer. Does anyone have knowledge in this area? It is late Friday night... but I will do what it takes if this is an emergency. Thanks for your help!

Why is it that people clip dog's ears or tails? I am not purchasing or adopting a dog and considering it, I just don't understand it. I've heard that they sometimes clip their ears because certain dogs are more suspectible to ear infections but that doesn't seem to be quite right. No stupid answers, PLEASE!

i was at work the other day and this co worker of mine... was telling me he need to get something to knock out his pit bull with.. seems he want to clip her ears and not take her to a vet to do it.. i told him that was cruelty to animal.. the other person beside him said it wasnt.cruel bacause they were not human.. and people circumsize boy babie and that was the real cruelty..well i got really mad and said just because they are animals dont mean they dont feel pain... i live in south ga.. so i know sometime that is common practice.. do it your self tail docking and ear clipping..when i live fl that was not so common..would any of you consider doing that to your pet .. i know i would not

I hear that dogs love to lick human feet, and I hear that it feels really good when you get your feet licked by a dog. Since the dog and I both enjoy it, how can I train a dog to lick my feet? I plan to get a husky puppy soon, so how do I train the husky to lick my feet? Also, how can I train a cat to lick my feet?

my poodle eats........differently. instead of eating at her bowl, she cariies a little individual piece somewhere in the room nibbles it up, and basically if it's good she eats, and i guess if it's not it just sits there. we have to vacuum every time we walk in that room (laundry room). My mom said mainly little dogs do that because they are "nibblers", unlike big dogs that are "gobblers"!! does anybody else's dog do this?? big or small??

My concern is more about the anesthetic used versus the actual cleaning. Can having him knocked out for this cleaning once a year be harmful to him? He is 6 1/2 years old - Beagle. The Vet says I should do it once a year. What do you think?

I was hoping maybe somebody had an explanation for my dogs strange behaviours.

1. At terribly random times, she will start "swimming" on her back across the carpet, she will start by rubbing her nose, then face on the carpet then she will turn over and swim all over the house on her back. This commonly occurs after she’s been given a yummy snack. Any idea why?

2. When you lightly blow on her face she starts getting hyper and runs around the house at unbelievable speeds for several minutes. Why?

3. She is constantly hopping like a kangaroo, sometimes for no reason. Will this affect her joints when she gets older?

4. When I howl she starts to howl back at me and she tries to lick inside my mouth, does this mean anything? (She only does this when I howl, and yes I know it's silly to howl)

5. When she does something bad, like tipping the garbage over, or forgetting to ask to go outside, she lies on her back and shows me her genitals (she only does to me). What does this mean?

Today I adopted a chihuahua/dachshunds mix for my household. I have two domestic cats. When I introduced them via a divided wall (like for a baby), the dog snapped and the cats ran off. Is this doomed to fail or is this just a period of adjustment? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

She's soo very sweet towards us...nothing but kisses all day long. She does have an attitude towards other people and animals but not me or my husband. I think she will protect the baby and not attack it.

I have a lot of knowledge about dogs and usually I do okay. recently my middle dog (I have 3 2 small 1 large) has started backing at treat time. She always get treats as they all do. She does every trick she knows which is alot and yaps the whole time. How can she understand every thing else I teach her but not this? Is she trying to tell me something?
(Oh and the other dogs sit quietly and tack the treats gently.)

These are some really nasty sulpher farts. I tried yelling at him but that didn't work. I tried to give him to my neighbor but the neighbor gave him back in less than one day!
