It is hard to tell, need to have the dog checked as there are sevral things that can make a dog cough. It could be a sign of a heart condition which he will need medication for, it could be a obstuction in the air passage, worms, kennel cough, even worms will sometimes cause a dog to cough. To know which one it is the dog needs to be checked by a vet.

is there a new dog in the area or has he been in contact with another dog or been to a kennel recently? It sounds like kennel cough. U can ger medication from the vet that will get rid of the cough. My dogs had it once from being at a kennel while we were away! I will never do that again!! Good luck

There is a possibility that it could be Kennel Cough, which could lead to something very serious. My reccommendation is to go to the vet. They will run some tests to find out what is really going on. Hope this helps!

I would suggest a vet check. Early stages of CHF (congestive heart failure) are coughing, gagging with nothing coming up. It is caused by liquid around the heart valve that is creating pressure.

I suspect That your dog has The flu because either you leave it outside or when you give it a bath you put it in a cold temperature that the body was used to. Or maybe your dog has somthing in its throat so small that it lets it breath, but not go through the the esophagus.

Could be just the breed - We've had 2 toy poodles and both of them had done this hyperventilation thing when they get really excited. They sound like they're having an asthma attack and then eventually they kind of gag and they're fine.

my dog had this too last year... i went to the vet and she said it was probably a fur ball and she wanted me to put some vaseline on my finger and let him eat it, only do it twice tho and if that doesn't work, take him to the the vet and find out more.

Hello...
Of course there could be an irritation in his throat, always check his passage first. Depending on the breed... some have problems with their tonsils. Have your vet check this out... My chinese crested had his tonsils out and we had results!
