First of all, I wish people to stop calling them pit bulls - they are Staffordshires. But that has nothing to do with your question - sorry.
The only reason for docking a tail or cropping the ears is if the dog is a show animal - to conform to the AKC standard. All others are unnecessary. And yes, it should be done by a veterinarian.
I once adopted a doberman puppy that had never had her ears or tail done. She was AKC registered, but certainly not show material. So I never bothered with the cropping or docking. Ironically, with natural ears and tail, nobody knew she was a doberman. Natural dobermans look more like a coon hound - and people aren't afraid of coon hounds. Oops - off the subject again...
No. I would never have a dog's ears cropped by anyone other than a licensed vet.
Yes, unfortunately, it is common practice by those who think only in terms of saving themselves money. If they do that to their dogs, they are a fine line from doing something as dastardly to their children and their spouses.
Even though you don't know where he lives, you DO know his name and where he works. Surely you also know what vehicle he drives. Give the information you DO know to the police or to the local animal control organization in your area. They have the same resources the police have and they can pinpoint him with just a name and/or car tag. And they have investigators who do not drive around in marked vehicles. I think they would love to get the info you have and what you know. It will likely lead to others who are doing this and/or are actively fighting dogs or game chickens.
There is a petition for tougher laws regarding dog fights and those who exploit dogs for their own gain. Although the deadline has passed for the actual petition, names are still being taken for future appeals. I am putting it here for all to see and, hopefully, sign and pass on: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/336129526

I know the practice started with fighting dogs to keep the ears from being torn off in the pit....but I cant see doing it myself for any reason. Aside from not knowing what to use/ or how to administer proper medication.....the pain to the animal on waking and the risk of infection....its just disgusting that somebody would do that !

This is plain animal cruelty and if it is actually done, it is punishable by law, as long as there is proof he did it. Ask him why he wants to crop her ears in the first place. He's clueless and shouldn't own a dog at all. By the way, tell your other co-worker that male circumcision is done surgically and hygenically. There is no correlation.

There is no good time to clip a pit bull’s ears off unless you want to turn the pit puppy into a scared and aggressive warrior, which is unlawful and unconscionable. Haven’t you watched “Animal Precinct” on cable’s Animal Planet? Seems every time the heroic animal control officers discover a pit bull with cut ears, the animal is a mess and must be put down in the interest of public safety.

There is absolutely no legitimate reason to have this dog's ears "clipped". This guy sounds like a moron that shouldn't have the privilege of owning an animal.

I had my pit bull's ears professionally cropped by a vet doctor who's been cropping ears for over 15 years. I would never dream of doing it myself. How inhumane.

You are right. I know how common that kind of thing is down there. That is where my family comes from. I have an uncle who all his live bred hunting dogs so dose his children and grandchildren . He would never crop or dock his dogs himself and punch more than one fellow red neck for doing it.

That is so cruel and the only reason to clip the ears is to fight them and that is another cruel subject.I've owned pits my entire life and I've never done anything so utterly cruel.

i don't think it should be done. circumcism is okay because there are certain complications that can occur such as infection of the excess skin. but clipping a dog's ears is pointless, just because someone thinks it looks better or whatever. dumba$$es. they may not be human, but they are living. they can feel pain, feel scared, etc.
