we had a toy poodle who we used to feed in the kitchen (wooden floors). she used to take a HUGE mouthful of her food (i mean like, her cheeks were poking out!!) and take it over to the carpet, spit it all out and eat it little piece by piece. she didnt like the orangey coloured bits so she would leave them in a pile!! we researched it and yes, poodles are fussy eaters (as are many other small dogs - and now i work in a shelter and this confirms it! lol), but not only are they fussy eaters, but they like to eat with something soft under their feet (ie carpet, rug, grass), just like they prefer to toilet with something soft under their feet.
my mum has 2 toy poodles currently and when she gives them their daily fog treat at lunch time, the female will gobble hers up, but the male will take all the pieces of his treats and put them in a pile and come back for his next little bit. when there is no more treats, the female wonders why she has none left, and the male casually strolls over to his pile and almost laughs at the female as if to say "na na na na na... i got the treats, u have none!!". they are so funny. i love poodles... =)

Hi There,
Ok, many dogs, but not all, take their food from there dish and hides under something so he/she could eat it. The reason is that if they were born with brothers and sisters they tend to take the food out of another dog and eat it. So, they go under some thing so that another dog won't eat it. Now, about the part where the dog leaves some of the food alone is probably because the owner before you or breeder feed a kind of dog food that has a different taste to them all. Like they may put a gravy on it, so they are all a different taste. This will probably stop sooner or later, but good luck. Bye.

It is SO FUNNY that you asked this. I was going to ask! My 70 lb lab does this! He NEVER eats directly from his bowl. He fills his mouth with food and brings it in my living room and kinda spits it back out on the carpet and then chews it up piece by peice. It drives me nuts but I've never gotten an answer why. He doesn't do it to be alone because typically, we're all in the living room when he does it (there are 6 people in our family). I know he feels he's a part of the family not an animal, but it's odd. He will do this and take his food to other rooms, too even when we're not home because I'll find pieces he missed. It's odd.

Oh Yes! I had a chihuahuah years ago who would do that. It was as funny as could be. He would get a bite of food, carry it upstairs, eat it, run back downstairs to get him another bite and do it again. If you would put the food in the room he was taking it to he would do the same, just take itto a different room. I have no clue why they do that.
I have a lab now who does that, but is not as bad. Usually she just does that when you give her a special treat.

My lab pit mix does this and I just think he likes a little bit at a time instead of shoving his face in the bowl. Each dog does things differently. Just be glad that your dog doesn't scarf down his meal which many dogs do. That isn't good for a dog at all.

I have a little Daschund and he would grab a piece of food, go all the way to my room, and then eat in in his bed. I tell him he is a weird dog but he looks at me as if I were cussing him out. He does that with treats too.

I have a pit bull/rottweiler mix. He is 7 months old but very big. He will go to his dish and take a bite and then come into whatever room we are and chew it over there. I don't know if it is because he is lonely or he just doesn't want to miss anything.

There is a way. You raise the bowl lever same as the stomach lever. And when feeding times put bit by bit in to the bowl for a week.

Hi, I was reading your question about your dog carrying his food away from his bowl. Dogs like to eat in private, he has to have his own space, and be alone with his food. It's ok, there is nothing wrong physically or mentally with your dog. Let him be, if he's happy eating away from his dish, it's cool.
