Hi, This exact same thing happened to my dog, he is a 4yr old male who is also in tact!!! Blood started coming out of his penis and there was stains where he was lying, he also couldn't leave it alone (even more so than usual!!!)
Please check he is urinating correctly and not in any other sort of distress, press his tunny and lower abdomen region to check for any bloatedness or swelling or any sign of discomfort from him.
My dog did end up going to the vet and he had a grass seed stuck inside his penis! This was causing the bleeding and irritation to his penis. I am not suggesting its definitely that and if you are worried or he is acting out of character then you should see your vet also. He may have a foreign body inside the penis area somewhere and he would need to see a vet to have this removed but it is not generally life threatening.
If you have a thermometer you can take his temperature as this is a good indication of how he is feeling, if he has a temperature it is more likely that he has an infection somewhere. You can get a thermometer at your local chemist for this and his (normal) temperature should range between 99.5° to 102.5°F. Like humans, dogs need to keep their body temperature as close to normal as possible.
Try not to panic too much as it might not be as doom and gloom as some of the answers here suggest!! Try and understand what your dog is telling you with his behaviour, appetite and such. If he is his normal bouncy, hungry self then its probably nothing too sinister. Monitor his behaviour make sure he can urinate okay and check his temperature and if you think he is out of sorts at all then take him to see a vet.
Good Luck,

This happened to one of my previous Yorkies. At first we thought the blood was coming from his back passage so we took him straight across to the vet. After many tests, the vet informed us that the red discharge was, in fact, haemoglobin and the source of that particular incident was a reaction from the dog's liver! Apparently, he may have ingested some tar particles by licking his paws clean... building works in the street!
Anyway, the vet put him on a drip for the day - and no further trouble occurred. Ask yourself, has he licked up anything on the streets? Don't worry, though, your vet will soon put you wise then, at least, you can stop worrying. Should there be anything not 100% in his 'wedding tackle', neutering will be the best option.
I wish your doggie Dane all the best! luv, Mo

If there are any signs of discomfort when urinating, or disruption to the flow of urine, then this is an emergency. If his urination is normal, then it is possibly not so life threatening and could wait til Monday morning when your Vet is open!!! In any event, he needs to see a vet.
Likely possible causes - bladder / urinary tract infection, bladder stones, bladder cancer, prostatitis, prostate cancer, penis trauma

I would advise you to take your dog to a vet.
A similar thing happened to my dog. I took him to the vet and was told it was a bladder infection.
It is always best to check these things out especially if you see blood in his urine.
Hope your dog gets better!
