Yes, they do..........but rotties can be very unpredictable, so make sure you watch for other signs of "having fun" like the tail wagging.
I worked for a vet for a long time who specialized in rotties and she told me to "never trust them", so I"m always cautious. For the most part, they are great dogs, but just make sure the tail is wagging before you think the "grr" is play, OK?

Rotties, like some other breeds, have some members that "grumble". This grumbling is just like a cat purring. It is just a vocalization of it's happiness.
Don't listen to anyone who might tell you that this is dangerous, or the dog is growling, they have no clue what they are talking about! (Dang little Trolls!)
I had a rottie who would grumble anytime you rubbed his lower back. This came in very handy, when visitors over stayed their welcome at my house. I would just start petting him, he would start getting really vocal, and people would leave!
Good luck with your dog. He is completely normal!

Your pet is trying to communicate with you the only way he knows how. If the grrrr is soft and non-threatening you are good to go. Tail wagging is generally an affirmation of happiness.

Oh Yes, my neighbor has 2 - huge lovable lugs - I have shepherd and poodle mix - it's just playing, kind of like us yelling or making some kind of "smack talk" when we play any sport. It's all in fun, especially if you are in a really good game of tug of war. It can get loud and scary to the uniniatied - but as long as you know they are playing it's cool. If you think your dog has a tendancy to perhaps slip into an aggressive mode, just keep a spray bottle of water nearby when playing and as soon as they get aggressive, spray them in the face. (I've never done this with my big dogs, only my little one! - he's the trouble maker!!!)

It's a left over response from having mock battles with his litter mates. As long as the tail wags, he's having fun.

I have an American Bulldog and she has big long jaws so when she breathes, her jaws kinda flap and it sounds like she's growling but since he's a big sized dog, he's going to do that. It isn't aggressive. You'll know when he's being aggressive.

I saw this on an animal program "do dogs laugh?". It's not a grrr growl, but more like snorts. In that show, they said it was a laugh.

Katslooku is on target - Rotties grumble, it almost sounds like they are talking. Ours does it when he wants attention & feels hes being ignored. They ARE happy when they do this
