Cats - January 2007

I have a male unneutered cat who is 2 years old. He doesn't whine, fight, spray, breed (entirely indoor and likes it that way) and is the most affectionate cat I've encountered. Honestly, I know all there is to know about why I SHOULD neuter my cat so I ask that no one tell me about that, I promise I've done my homework. What I haven't found are any reasons not to and that worries me more than it comforts me. I know there are negative effects to having a major hormone-producing organ surgically removed, but no one will admit to any of them. The only thing I've heard is that cats may gain weight after being neutered because they won't be spending as much energy on humping and fighting and their personalities may change...they'll be more friendly. Yay. Those are backhanded answers. When a human goes in for any surgery there is a 3 page handout that covers all of the possible side-effects even for tonsilechtomies. All I want is similar information for my cat so I can be fully informed.

It started a yr ago. Sometimes he sprays the couch. Has also pooed on the kids bed a few times. Pees in my bathroom. Goes outside sometimes (when not too cold) and goes in litter box too. How can I get him to stop?

Before I left for work this morning I fed both of my cats. The one that bit me is almost 2 years old now and doesn't venture outside much like the other cat. She probley gets bored around the house all day but we play with her all the time. I just reached down to get my purse - she was lying near it - and she latched on to my hand and arm with all four feet and bit me sooooo hard. She knew it hurt me cause she ran off immeditley after she did it even before I yelled out in pain. I cant figure out why she did that to me? Any one have any ideas on this?

Do you think cats can understand cats from other countries? Do you think they speak different cat languages?

These toys came from a house with other cats, but I have a feeling it has more to do with the catnip in the toy. Has anyone else every seen this? Or maybe know why the cats do this?

I got a cat, male, 10 months old, neutered, in my appartment. He lives with my bf and I since the age of 2 months old.
A friend of mine got his little brother (same mummy cat) who is a 5 months old male, not neutered.

During my friend's vacation, I will take care of her kitten. Do you think the 2 kitten will like each other ? They never met before, and I fear that they will fight each other...

My persian kitten is over 8 months old. I started clipping her claws when she was about 5... i noticed that the skin around where her claws grow (both on her front legs/arms? is that the right term?) started to become flaky and appears to have sort of an infection (flaky skin debris which are also kind of wet at the same time although it doesnt smell). It appears that i may have clipped her claws longer than the usual... but then i noticed that the claws at her hindlegs are like that too, which i never clipped at all...ever... i only clip the ones at her front legs/arms... what could it be?

I'm five months pregnant with my first child and I live in a very small house. I have a pug, my BF has a Yorkie and I also have a cat. My cat likes to crawl in every space possible and sleep, I have been considering giving him to my sister to care for with the baby coming. I'm very afraid he will crawl into the crib with the baby and smother him trying to find a good place to sleep. Plus, my BF's Yorkie is a stubborn, mean, spoiled dog that constantly tries to kill my cat. They have gotten into some scraps in the past and my cat can hold his own but I'm wondering if it would be best to let him stay with my sister. I have had my cat Tigger for over ten years. I got him about a year before I got my Doberman and I just lost my Doberman in Sept. He died in his sleep. I don't know how this will affect my cat. Does he have the ability to feel abandoned? Will he miss me? I can't stand the thought of him feeling lost but I think he would be happy and my baby safer.

It's clearing up now though, we thought she had a nervous habit of licking/biting till her fur comes off... whenever we are away like she is lonley or something... does this happen to anyone else? it cannot be fleas, she has her medicine. Also she is 3 years old

I've been told by friends that by putting a belled collar on my cat it will cause him to become deaf before old age. Is this true? Or is this an old wives' tale? I would like any scientific proof or study informaiton on this subject.

My Jago is 2 and a half years old. From day one he was a very picky eater. But we managed somehow and he was growing nicely and gaining weight. Now the things are completely different. He became very skinny.
We tried offering him every kind of food there is - wet and dry from every single producer (he takes just few bites of Hill's), nibbletts, cat milk... Now we even have to beg him to eat fresh meat!
We ran tests at vet and all the results came out fine. No problem what so ever! The vet said "sometimes they are just skinny!". Somehow I can't make myself believe this one. Has anyone ever had such a problem? Please help!

I have a new 12 week old kitten and a 2 year old cat. They are both wonderful felines BUT they are playing off each other at night and chase one another around my apartment. This is keeping me awake but worse - they are keeping my downstairs neighbours awake too. The 2 year old, prior to the kitten's arrival was always calm and slept through the night, but now, she is often the instigator to these nighttime crazies. She loves the kitten and loves to mother him so I don't want to give up on them (ie. I really want to keep the kitten). I have tried rescue remedy on both kitties but that hasn't worked. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and found a solution? My neighbours aren't really forgiving and I can't afford to lose my apartment, but I don't want to give up on this responsibility I have taken on. Thanks for ANY (humane) suggestion you may have!

I don't know very much about declawing. Does it hurt them at all? Do they even notice that it's been done? Will they still be able to scratch themselves when they are itchy? I just want them to stop scratching the furniture, but I don't really want to do that to them...

My kitten, I'm guessing to be about 3-4 months old, since I just found her outside a few months ago, and so it's my best guess based on her size. Lately she has had an enlarged stomach and at first I just thought maybe she was eating too much. I have kept an eye on her poop and have seen no worms. Then for the last few days I've noticed that in the spots where she has been sleeping on my bed there have been large wet spots of at least 5x5" or so, give or take each time. They have no odor and no color that I can tell. She isn't acting sick, she's still playing and running around with my other cats, but it has me worried. I have made an appointment for next week with the vet, it's the soonest one I could get. But I'm just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else before just to maybe give me an idea of what it might be because I am really confused. And if anyone has seen it before and knows its something bad I may take her into the emergency vet. Thanks!

I have 2 desexed male cats. My nearly 2 year old cat constantly urinates on clothes that are on the floor, or in the washing basket, he even has on our lounge! He uses the tray for his poo. How can I stop this from happening especailly cos we dont actually catch him. It is driving us mad. The younger cat does not have the same problem. It has been happening for a long time. Any advice on how we can stop this would be great. i do try to ensure that there is no clothes on teh floor, but it will be just about anywhere, in the back of my husbands work ute, on his work chairs and ropes. PLEASE HELP!!
