I've been told by friends that by putting a belled collar on my cat it will cause him to become deaf before old age. Is this true? Or is this an old wives' tale? I would like any scientific proof or study informaiton on this subject.

No, it won't make them loose their hearing as the decibels of the bell are not that high. I personally take the bells off of my cats collars because it drives my crazy.

My cats don't wear collars, but my Parents had a cat that wore a collar with a bell...she lived to be 22 years old and she could hear just fine, so no the bell is not going to make your cat deaf.

Cats prefer to be stealthy. It is their nature as hunters.

I would personally be very annoyed at having a bell tied to me. I don't think that the cats care for it either. Though I realize that many people like to do this for their kittens, so they know where they are- and I think that is fine for a time, but I would not keep it on too long. And if your cat is an outdoor cat at all, then I would not do it what so ever. You are then taking away a line of defense from other animals.

But generally, I think that cats- like most other animals, have very senistive hearing. Allowing them to hear small sounds at great distance. These are usually sounds that people cannot hear as well, as they are higher in pitch. So I don't think that a bell is too damaging- but as I said, I wouldn't use it for long.

Since most cat collars come with bells on them, I always buy the ones with the bells and remove them. My indoor cat dosen't need to scare birds, and the bell just irrates her. One of my cats that goes outside can still catch birds if he wears a bell. So I say remove the bell, your cat will thank you.

heck no. I've kept bellls on the collars of all my cats and they haven't had an hearing problems at all if someything like a bell would make them go deaf then the sounds they hear to survive would also make them go deaf
