i think its pretty weird ...but why do they do this and what dose it mean?

This is called the Fleming response. Cats have a gland on the roof of their mouth. If one cat sniffs another cats butt, you'll most likely see the cat lift his head a little, open his mouth and almost stick his bottom jaw out a little. This helps get that smell into the gland so he can see if he likes the cat. It is funny to watch...

When a cat smells with its mouth open, it is using its Jacobson's organ, an organ cats and some other animals have at the back of their throats. It helps them to smell more deeply and to pick up the chemical make-up of the scent.

My vet said cats do this when they like the way something smells. After reading everyone elses answers i think i need a new vet.

Cats have glands in their mouths that help them smell as well, so they are just gathering more info this way.

when their mouth is open after smelling anything it means their air passage/way has opened so they can smell better or something like that! It's normal & they look cute & funny when it happens!
