I think sometimes animals start doing things and realise that they work for them so continue to do them. Somewhere along the line your cat has realised it can go number two in your toilet without getting shouted at and not having to go outside. This may have occurred because someone in your house went to the toilet and forgot to flush!!!!!! and your cat was attracted to by the smell to go there also. My mum's cat hovers over the drain in the bath and pee's, quite gross but we found it funny at the start and it's kind of hard to stop her know. She also plucks at the strip of plastic along the bottom of the front door to let us know she wants in. None of these things was she shown but through getting a desired outcome she continues to do so. Your cat is no different all you need now is to teach him to flush.

some one has trained him to do this. You can buy pans to put on your toilet and fill with litter to train the cat to go there. eventually you take away the pan and litter and you have a toilet trained cat. Not really common but not compleatly unusual either
EDIT:
are you sure you know what end is what and your cat was not just drinking out of the toilet? That is not something I can see a cat picking up on it's own. Maybe another person in the house has trained it. Were you young when you got the cat?

That is the coolest thing! How clever! Your cat must have watched Jinx on that movie 'meet the parents'. Keep up the good work as how easy would that be to clean up! If only we could toilet train all animals this way!

Lol... no its not normal but it is pretty damn cool. And less litter. Now if he flushes too.... thats even better. Remember my ginksy off meet the parents? I wish my cat would use the toilet. my sister in laws dog used to use my neices potty chair, he was never taught it either.

It's not the usual cat behavior but somehow he has learned it, and good for him! It's a good thing for you too since it will keep the litter box cleaner. My sister-in-law had a cat that could do that but she trained him to.

I have a friend who trained her cat to do that, but I've never known of a cat to just learn it on their own.
