Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ raw berries, raw sliced almonds mixed in.

Lunch: "Green" smoothie (lettuce, carrots, bananas, berries, watermelon, flax seeds, & wheatgrass) Don't cringe, it's actually delicious! =)

Dinner: An open-face sandwich (whole rye bread, vegan mayo, lettuce, sliced beets) I can't get enough of those, so delicious, but I'm only eating a moderate portion.
OR
Whole wheat pasta w/ olive oil or tomato sauce.

Snacks: Apples/Peaches/or Dates.

I'm 17, and at 5'10 & 140 lbs, I'd like to lose 20 lbs. Am I missing anything? Any suggestions? Tips? I walk 5 miles a day (to and from school, or work).

First off, let me introduce myself. I'm J.R., and I'm a Texan vegetarian (oxymoronic, I know). I chose vegetarianism not because of animal rights or environmental concerns, but because my total cholesterol peaked at over 300 (180-200 is normal). Since becoming a vegetarian only months ago, my cholesterol has dropped 60 points and my overall health has improved. When I first changed my diet, I fully intended to return to my old ways once I got healthy, but I ended up learning too much (ignorance truly is bliss) and now I have decided to stay vegetarian indefinitely, and I'm planning to switch to veganism within a few months.
When I abstained from meat for health reasons, everyone was fine with my descision, but when I announced to my family or friends that my diet had become a moral descision they looked at me like I had just spit on them. There was an immediate shift from my healthy diet to "J.R.'s ****ing stupid diet".
Everyone I know was genuinely afraid that vegetarianism was contagious, and they needed to "cure" me. They constantly try to temp me with meat (which has become completely anappetizing to me) or give me lectures about protein (I've been into powerlifting and sports nutrition since high school, my protein intake is higher than anyone I know). I haven't been preachy to anyone, and I've only talked about my diet at all when I'm asked.
Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else, if it has, how did you handle it? I don't want to step on any toes, but I won't throw away my morality for someone else to be comfortable.

I have even seen chefs and nutritionist make this assumption. My diet is more then just vegetables. I eat lots of fruit, nuts, seeds, herbs, legumes, and grains. My diet is very diverse!

Ok I'm 13 and want to become a vegetarian. I told my mom this a while ago and told her how I thought eating innocent animals was wrong she said I still wouldn't save the animal and it would die anyway. This made me so mad! Anyway, I *sadly* went back to eating meat because my mom wouldn't help me. So basically...

How do you get started?

Thanks!

As most of you know I am moral upstanding citizen who does not eat mest, conusme alcohol or use any products that would contain an animal content. However, last night my BF ( yes some will remember he is a stockbroker) had a reception with his office. Well.... they insisted that everybody take a glass of sparkling wine (champaigne) to celebrate their great billing cycle. I was forced to drink the glass of champaigne..... Now I feel so immoral because of it. Yes, it did make me warm and a little fuzzy all over but that is why it is evil. Should I tell my BF that he needs to explain to his work that alcohol is immoral and that they should not have it at functions?

YES this is a real ?, and any hatemongers will bereprted. I am in a real quagmire at the moment.

My grandparents live in the country and their neighbor has three hens. The hens have run of the yard, but spend most of their time in a perfectly nice, clean chicken coop. The neighbor lady is really nice to the hens, and collects the few eggs that they lay a couple of times per week. I am vegan and I have not eaten eggs in years, nor do I crave them. However, my mom asked me if I would be willing to eat cookies, cakes, etc. made with these eggs and only vegan ingredients for the rest. I vaguely answered that I might, but I feel a little weird about it. I know that the hens have a good life, so my question is this: fellow vegans, would you eat eggs from these hens? Note, I am not asking for "permission"; I am just curious where others weigh in on this.

I told her the health risks of meat and dairy.
But her reply was "No, you can cook the germs and bacteria out of the meat. And the dairy is pasteurized, so theres nothing harmful in it."

I'm trying my best to be vegan.
So far I don't touch anything outside of the house that isn't vegan.
What can I tell her to let her know that its bad?
(p.s. she doesn't care about how the animals are treated either.)

alrighty, so i have decided to become a vegan for awhile, just to see what its like, the benefits, etc. but when i usually go online to search for food that can be considered "vegan" its always crazy recipes with things ive never heard of...and im not the type of person who has enough time to cook every night. so, my REAL question is, does anyone have any suggestions on just some premade, requires little cooking, vegan types of foods that you can just buy at the supermarket? because im not sure if i can go through with being vegan if id have to cook something every single day.

any brand names, or whatever, works, any help is appreciated :D

The question was raised when I was talking to a meat-eater who said she felt guilty about eating chocolate (she had no problem with eating dead animals!) - I just wondered if any of you get a guilt complex about anything you eat! P .S. I am a lifelong veggie - no eggs, meat or fish, but I eat dairy.

I seem to have attracted my very own troll

http://answers.yahoo.com/my/profile;_ylt=AnTbwJoj2vdLJjt7Oq5G7IPty6IX;_ylv=3?show=UM8EFzIMaa

He is a handsome devil, if I say so myself. Pointy ears and a two-tone face.

I must be real important or something to have a troll all my own.

Does anybody else have there very own troll? Any tips for proper care and feeding?

There's something wrong when you go to a restaurant as a vegetarian and you can't even order a salad that doesn't have meat on it. I know I could ask for it without the meat, but then I'm just paying a ridiculous price for it (they don't take that into consideration on the bill).

What's the world coming to?

Just begining the process. I have friend who is helping me as well, but she thought that I should talk to several people about this subject. I have started making a list of foods I like to eat and restraunts I like to go. I know you don't eat meat, but I know there are a lot of things I don't know about that have animal fat in them. If you could help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

I'm planning on getting a gift for a vegan friend (who is in the process of throwing out all his old leather.) What's the BEST store to get a gift certificate from? (Though not necessary, a plus would be a store local to Boston/Hanover...since he lives nearby.) Thanks!!

i understand not wanting to harm, eat, or distress an animal of any sort; but what happens if you get insects i.e. ants or roaches? do you poison them?

please don't say "oh, well i'm an emaculate person so that will never happen" b/c you can visit a friend or a friend can visit someone else and bring back a stowe away roach.

just something i've always wonderd....

Also, does anyone know if there's any kind of soy/tofu bacon on the market? I love bacon, and it'll be really tempting for me if my stepdad makes some, so if anyone knows about a brand it would be really helpful to have it around the house.
