It really is just stupid consumers.
Customer knows they like meat.
Customer knows that they should be eating healthy.
Customer knows that salads are healthy.
Customer buys salad with meat on it. Customer is happy (they are eating meat and think that they are eating healthy)
Restaurant is happy (they sold an over priced salad to a happy customer)
Customer is still not eating healthy.
See it is a win - win - win situation (not really)

LOL (I know it's not really funny... but for some reason it just makes me laugh... how inconsiderate the world it)
I have noticed that too. That's why I rarely eat out... if I do it is usually at a vegetarian/ vegan restaurant, or somewhere that I know is veggie friendly.
My boyfriend don't mind, he loves veggie food... So it kind of works out for both of us.
Edit: I was told by a certain Green and Ghostlike "Top Contributor" that this "meaty salad" problem is because restaurants can't make any money off of salads anymore, 'cause produce prices are so high now. Meanwhile the price of meat has dropped because ranchers are selling off stock to avoid high feed prices. The restaurants can add just a little bit of meat to a salad just so they can jack up the price (to pay for the expensive produce). :]

Most "House Salads" (side salads) are meat free. You can always order them, or even 2 if you are real hungry. I have plenty of times.
Only on rare occasions do I order 1 of the salads that have meat & have them take if off. Applebees has a Chicken Salad I do, but it has other things on it to make it worth while. I do have a spouse that eats meat, sometimes I just take the meat off & take it home for a meal for him. You could do that for your freinds, just get a to go box put it in there.
The world is coming to a FAT food focused society. So health aware people are rarely thought about at all. I too many times have been recomended restuarants not because the food was great but because they served huge amounts of food for the money. DUH?

What's really laughable (or not) is how fast-food restaurants offer salads as a "healthy" option, and they're even worse than the sandwiches because the dressings are loaded with fat and sugar, and there's all this meat and cheese on the salad. But McDeathburger and Murder King can pretend they're offering healthy options because you can get a salad there.
Whatever.

I think they're trying to make main meals out of salads these days. And you're right...it's not fair that you have to pay extra for no meat, and we meat eaters have to pay more to add it. I was a veg back in '85-'87 and it was even harder then.
Next time, try ordering whatever non-meat salad they have (even if it's just plain mixed green) and asking if they can add things to it, or make it larger. Or maybe they can sub the meat for avocado, or some other expensive non-meat ingredient?
Good luck! I know how tough it can be!

Oh, I know. Whatever happened to a garden salad? My granny took me out to lunch at Perkins (her favorite) and I thought, well, at least I can get a salad. The closest I could have come with an entree salad would have been the BLT chicken salad, minus the chicken, bacon and cheese (that's lettuce and tomatoes, basically). I ended up with a side salad made out of iceberg lettuce, lol.

i don't think it's a current trend, i mean, every restaurant that i've been to is kind of like that. i think it's more of a trend to start piling a million things in a salad regardless if they're healthy or not (like this steak salad i've seen on commercials a lot). it's a marketing strategy to pump up restaurants' salads by putting some lettuce under a normal dish and calling it the "healthy" option.

I'm a little confused as well. I'm not a vegetarian, but generally when I opt for a salad I'm looking for something healthier. What's the point of getting a fried chicken or pepper crusted steak and bleu cheese salad anyway? If I want steak I want steak, if I want a salad I want a salad.

Calm down...most restaurants I go to that are offering the salad with chicken, beef or whatever is appealing to those that want a healthy one plate meal. They do also offer a house salad for much less money which is strictly veggies, or you can choose the salad bar and make your own.
