funny, my brother's friend thought the same thing, so i looked it up on the jack website and showed him that it is indeed made of both soy protein and beef (among other weird things):

Beef Regular Taco or Beef Monster Taco® Filling Ingredients: Beef, Water, Textured Vegetable Protein (Soy Flour, Caramel Color), Soy Grits, Seasoning [Chili Powder (Chili Peppers, Spices, Salt, Garlic Powder), Wheat Flour, Taco Mix (Chili Pepper, Garlic, Salt, Spices, Monosodium Glutamate, Dextrose, Onion), Imitation Beef Extract (Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy, Wheat and Corn Protein, Monosodium Glutamate, Dextrose, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Disodium Guanylate, Disodium Inosinate), Silicon Dioxide (added to prevent caking)], Salt, Tomato Paste, Worcestershire Sauce (Distilled Vinegar, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Water, Salt, Caramel Color, Garlic Powder, Sugar, Spices, Tamarind, Natural Flavor, Sulfiting Agent). Tortilla Ingredients: Ground Corn, Water, Lime. Contains Soy, Wheat

Like everyone else has said, of course they aren't vegetarian.

That's an urban legend that got started because they use fillers in them. The dog meat thingie (the real reason I decided to answer) is another urban legend that got started because Jack in the Box used to be owned by Ralston-Purina and way back in the '70s the taco (and burrito) production was done at the same R-P plant that made Chuckwagon dog food! Somewhere along the line the story changed from saying the tacos are made from dog food into the tacos ARE made of dog.

If you're vegetarian there's not much reason to visit the clown.

Nope - they're not vegetarian.

Now here's more than you wanted to know:

Jack in the Box tacos, a permanent menu item since the mid-1950s, have developed a loyal, almost cult following among guests. Consider these taco facts:

Jack in the Box is the first major hamburger fast-food chain to offer tacos in all its restaurants.

600 Jack in the Box tacos are eaten each minute, a total of 315,360,000 tacos each year.

Jack in the Box uses 16 million pounds of fresh, stone-ground, US-grown corn each year to make tortillas - that's approximately 2,500 acres of corn.

The pattern of brown flecks on the taco shell, a distinguishing characteristic of Jack in the Box tacos, are grill marks resulting from the chain-linked conveyor belt that moves the tortillas through a 700-degree oven.

Jack in the Box hands out 136 million packets of taco sauce each year.

Jack in the Box purchases 11 million pounds of beef each year just for tacos.

Placed end to end, the number of Jack in the Box tacos sold each year would reach a distance of approximately 28,500 miles, more than once around the earth.

Their site says Beef & Cheese "the real stuff."
Our family joke is they Dog Meat tacos.. The only meat I ate while expecting my last child was them for breakfast. I use to pick them up on the way to work many mornings.

Only if you tell them to leave the meat off. If it's like taco bell, they add potato flakes to the meat to make it stretch farther - that's probably why it tastes different.

I don't know. Never been there.

At resturaunts I order burgers without burgers, tacos without any meat, etc. Safer that way.

They stretch the meat with a little soy protein, so you are not going there!
