I have even seen chefs and nutritionist make this assumption. My diet is more then just vegetables. I eat lots of fruit, nuts, seeds, herbs, legumes, and grains. My diet is very diverse!

VeggieTart, Not true, I am hard pf hearing (partialy deaf) and I took 3 years of sign language.
There is no official sign for vegetarian in American Sign Language!
If one uses the sign for vegetable then their using that because it's the only word they have.
I myself would not use that word, I would do a list. I EAT 1 GRAINS 2 FRUITS 3 LEGUMES and so on ..
That's the beauty of sign language though, we can say stuff however we like as long as it is in context.

Life without meat is very confusing to them; I really don't think they know what food is out there.
Also, the "vege" part confuses them. Sure there are vege-tables, but vege-tation includes grains, fruits... anything that grows without having been born really . Besides, the "vege" in vegetarian means "Life," not vegetables.
:)
Yay for diverse veggie cuisine.

Not many people go vegetarian because they hate the taste of meat. Most people go veggie because they want to stop animals being killed. I used to love the taste of meat, so eating veggie burgers/veggie sausages/etc is fine with me.

Maybe because the word itself refers to "vegetable eater". We studied before about vegetarians. There is no vegetarian that eats vegetables alone. They also eat tofu to be an alternative protein source. Maybe you "chef" and "nutritionist" haven't been through books lately. Not everyone knows all about everything, maybe they should have a course update!

They don't know that vegetarian comes from "vegetus," which is Latin for vigorous or lively. The sign language for vegetarian is actually the sign for "vegetable" plus the marker for "person"--literally, "vegetable person." Go figya.

I guess it's the same reason they think we eat fish and chicken broth. They are just not educated when it comes to what a vegetarian is. The prefix "vege" does not help the matter either.

Well the name sounds like "eater of veggies" the same way that fruitarian sounds like "eater of fruits" and that's all fruitarians eat, right?
I think "vegetarian" is something of a misnomer perhaps non-meat eater would be better?

Yeah, they don't think much, even if they have master's degrees, they can't see past their own noses.

The more important question is, who cares? If you're happy being a vegetarian, don't worry about what other people assume. All I know is that steak I had for dinner tonight was very, very good. I'm a proud member of PETA:
