The oldest dog in the world is a vegan dog, border collie in Australia that lived for 27 years.

I know a user on here who has been vegan for 25,raised her two sons vegan and had a cat on a vegan diet that lived for 25 years, two months away from a Guinness world record.Anything that cats need can be synthesized, and dogs are omnivores, they can live as herbivores or carnivores.

I don't have a cat anymore, she died of leukemia. When I did I fed her off the shelf cat food, but that was before I knew better.

I think those who are vegetarian and feed their pets animal based protein are hypocrites!

Pet food with animal based protein in it basically contains ground up animal parts.

edit: There seems to be some confusion concerning a cat on a vegetarian diet. Cats on a vegetarian diet can indeed get all nutrients they miss from once eating animal protein. They can get it from vegetarian cat food that has been fortified or by supplementation.

Both cats and dogs have a symbiotic relationship with humans--cats are believed to have domesticated themselves when they realized that hanging around humans meant they got food more reliably than if they foraged and killed mice and birds. That didn't mean cats stopped killing vermin; it actually meant they could do so more reliably because they would have food from humans to supplement what they caught.

So it's not completely unnatural for anyone to live with cats and dogs (I refuse to say "own." She's my cat, yes, but I am her person). Cats are not completely domesticated, of course; they still have a bit of the "wild animal" in them that can come out at play. But they will also happily coexist with humans when it suits them.

I had lived with my cat for seven years when I decided to go vegetarian and then vegan. Humans can do just fine without animal protein; cats cannot. So I feed my kitty premium canned cat food and prescription dry (a few age-related complaints, poor baby).

I feed my dogs regular dog food because I can't afford vegan dog food. I try to give them scraps of my vegan food as often as I think their stomachs will accept it. I would prefer an alternative that is affordable.

What they are supposed to eat. It's cruelty to animals, especially cats, not to give them what they need. Cats will go blind without a meat based diet. As true carnivores, they cannot synthesize beta carotene into vitamin A and must have the retin form from meat. They will even go blind eating only dog food.

Edit: Here is some more information about the concerns of feeding a cat a vegetarian diet: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/catfood.html

Please, if you cannot deal with feeding your pet what it needs to live, do not get that kind of pet. There are plenty of animals who are natural vegetarians.

I feed my dog "Natural Balance" vegetarian dog food, plus some scraps from my vegan meals.

It seems odd to me that a person would argue about how "unnatural" vegetarian dog food is, when nothing about the life of a domesticated dog is "natural." If dogs lived in their "natural" state, they wouldn't live with people in houses, playing with plush toys, and being fed dry kibble out of a bag. I see no harm in feeding my dog a healthy, well-balanced commercial dog food that just happens to get its protein content from non-animal sources. My dog is healthy, happy, and well-cared for. Of course, the real irony is that if I said that I was a vegan who fed my dog meat-based dog food, I'd still face a ton of criticism based on that "hypocrisy." Some people are so uncomfortable with the idea of veganism that they complain about it for any reason that they can think of.

Good cat/dog food ( I use Purina ONE for both). Animals were not meant to be vegan. They can't make a choice about their diet based on their personal choices, only we can.

Innova Evo. Unlike people dogs are not herbivours. Fillers can cause allergies and upset the dogs stomach. Innova Evo is a high quality all natural holistic food with no fillers.
