My grandparents live in the country and their neighbor has three hens. The hens have run of the yard, but spend most of their time in a perfectly nice, clean chicken coop. The neighbor lady is really nice to the hens, and collects the few eggs that they lay a couple of times per week. I am vegan and I have not eaten eggs in years, nor do I crave them. However, my mom asked me if I would be willing to eat cookies, cakes, etc. made with these eggs and only vegan ingredients for the rest. I vaguely answered that I might, but I feel a little weird about it. I know that the hens have a good life, so my question is this: fellow vegans, would you eat eggs from these hens? Note, I am not asking for "permission"; I am just curious where others weigh in on this.

I wouldn't, but that's mostly because I'm allergic to eggs. I don't see anything unethical about using the eggs; do whatever you think is right. Eggs aren't that great for your health though - TONS of cholesterol and they can also cause your skin to break out.

I'm not a Vegan, but I'd like to respond to your question. You know for a fact these chickens are well treated, so the usual complaints about commercial chicken farming do not apply. A hen lays something like 300+ eggs per year, whether they're fertilized or not. So these eggs are not "baby chickens" they are simply eggs. So really in this instance there is no rational, moral objection to eating the eggs.

I hope you don't dwell on this too long, whichever way you decide. Either way it's your decision.

I have never baked with farm fresh eggs before, however my mother has and she had a problem with them too. Except her problem was that her cake became very yellow-ish, and she was supposed to be making a white cake. I'm not sure why this happens, but I have an idea that it has to do with the chemicals the put in eggs and that they give to chickens.

It is my understanding (not being vegetarian or vegan) that those who do not eat dairy or eggs rpoducts do so because of the cruely involved in the 'farming' of those products for the mass market (which I agree with that reasoning); and that most would not object to consuming the same products from, say, a family farm that is near you or from your own animals that you know are well kept, happy and healty.
I hope you won't dismiss my opinion becuase I am not vegetarian or vegan; I have thought about it many times and do actually know alot about eating vegetarian, but I have never actaully lived that way full time. (But I do love a veggie burger maxed out with the works!) ^_^

I am not a vegan, have thought/wanted to become, due to cruelty of animals, hormones. antibiotics, etc. As for the chicken eggs, why not? Seeing as they have free run of the yard (as mine do), and assuming that: she also supplements with hopefully organic feed ( as I do), and that she does not have a rooster (we don't), they should be fine. If all 3 of "stipulations" are met, then they are cruelty, hormone and antibiotic free, and NOT living. Another post stated that eggs are unhealthy for you, that is why I raise my own. Free range eggs are higher in Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, and Omega-3. They are LOWER in Cholesterol. (As tested and compared to store bought eggs). While I am not Vegan, I do care immensely about putting all kinds of junk into my Children's diets, this is why I raise my own eggs, buy meat directly from free-range, etc farms. Check out the site below for more information on the quality of free-range eggs.

Well, I would watch how the eggs are gathered. Assuming they are gathered harmlessly, I would dig right in. It would be a cruelty free egg I suppose, but you can only eat those eggs, remember that. Don't go off to the grocery store and eat those, because the come from a corperational farm.
But please do eat the cruelty free eggs, might be your only chance. I recommend a good egg sandwich..they are delicious!

Yes, i would but only ONCE in a WHILE.

My description of vegan/vegetarian:

Vegan/vegetarians: When you eat what you belive is right; If you feel that it is wrong to eat that, then dont. if you feel it is right; then do.

Its okay to eat eggs, because they are not alive and could never be, unless you have a rooster.

But it all depends on what you feel.

I eat eggs. Once in a while, anyways.

I would eat them, but you should tell your grandparents to pen those hens up they could be losing tons of eggs that they cant find.

Let your conscience be your guide.

Note: As I was reading my book last night I happen to notice that I had spelled the word conscience in the wrong context (conscious) the first time around, sorry.

personally, i wouldn't. i understand that the hens are being well-cared for, and that's great. they're much more privileged than 99% of the chickens in america. but one of the reasons i chose to be a vegan is for health reasons. i don't want the extra fat and cholesterol that eggs have to offer. i'm fine without it.

oh, plus... it'd be kinda weird eating chicken period again :ol
