My mum has been advised to reduce her intake of potatoes due to arthritis. Can any of you recommend a good substitute that will go with most dinners.

She had couscous yesterday - any recommendations how she can make it more interesting.

Also sweet potatoes - what's the best way to cook them? Can they be steamed?

Thanks

Last year cooler nights stopped the figs from ripening. Is there a good use for green ones. I have a recipe or two, but I am not sure they'll be worth it. Do you have a recipe you have used? What were they like? Crunchy? Sweet? Tart? Etc.

I am slightly lactose intolerant and have to deal with the runny bum after enjoying one of my favorite snacks. I like to watch tv and eat some potato chips, works well with veggies too, b ut my bum has requested I find some nice non-lactose alternatives.

I am headed back to school in one week and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for creative lunches that don't get too boring after a few months. Sandwiches get dull after awhile. Thanks so much for the ideas (college student, really like veggies and salads...if this helps)

Ok fellow baking enthusiasts out there...I have a question for you. I have resorted to making homemade cinnamon rolls for my caramel roll recipe, I usually use Rhoad's Giant Rolls but they are no where to be found outside of my homestate. The bump in the road that I am hitting is that when I go to make the cinnamon filling for the rolls, I used light butter. All of the butter melted and ran out of the bottom of the rolls. Now, my question is, what would work better to keep the butter (and subsequentially the cinnamon and sugar) from sliding out of the bottom of the roll...margarine? Maybe half butter flavored shortening? I know that they both have higher melting points and I think that this might make for a yummier cinnamon roll. Thanks for the insight in advance!!! And any and all tips appreciated!

I was making myself a salad with ranch dressing and i thought i wanted something else in it. But we dont have carrots olives or anything. So i took a bag of chips, grabbed a couple, and smashed them. I put the smashed chips in the salad and it tastes great! This may sound gross, but its delicious! By the way, I used all natural chips. Try this next time you have ranch, lettuce, and these chips.

I have a London Broil that I am planning to marinate and cook for dinner tonight. Currently I have a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and minced garlic (from a jar). Do you have any advice on what to add to this or what to do instead?
