why is it that in some baking recipes it says to let the dough stand for an hour and in others it says to let the dough sit for an hour and still others to let it rest for an hour?

I'm looking for an easy traditional-style fruitcake that I can make at home without all of the bitter fruit stuff that they out in some of the store-bought ones. Maybe a coconut, macadamia nut and pineapple fruitcake? I'm not a great cook, so it has to be easy.

Has anyone attempted making the filling at home? If so, how did you make it? It appears to be a cream cheese or buttercream icing with chunks of peppermint candy.

My father-in-law will be coming to my house Christmas Eve for gift exchange and I am serving hot ham sandwiches at my husband's request. What side dishes would be best served with this? It's fairly casual, but I still want to make something with holiday flair.
