Desktops - May 2007

At the end of the day we always shut down the computer, I prefer to use the little key, which says you can safely shut down your system. My husband always uses the other little box, and just shuts down the system.. Or is there any need to be concerned on which is used?

I have a Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L motherboard, I'm upgrading my RAM and want to know if dual channel memory will work on a non dual channel motherboard. And also whats the difference?

What about if it's just one stick of RAM thats dual channel compatible? I found it on ebay and unsure weather to buy or not.

i am planning to reformat my pc because of a virus...
but the problem is there are some files in my C: that i want to retrieve some files first before reformating... another prob is i cant access the pc cause the virus stops windows startup...

a window says that it can be resolved by inserting the windows cd and attempt a repair...

will it work....?
so you have any suggestions on how to retrieve my files...

one more thing, i misplaced my windows cd... so i bought a new one with sp2, will it work?
my former windows doesnt contain sp2 in the cd...

I bought a new computer last month with a Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G/2.1 Motherboard and 2 sticks of Kingston HyperX 512 MB DDR II 800 Ram.

I noticed yesterday during my boot sequence that the memory is only being recognised as 667 Mhz. Upon taking the computer to my supplier's lab, they told me that my bios version was causing the problem and they needed to upgrade that.

Four hours later they had still not solved the problem. Being a fairly proficient user myself, I would rather solve the problem on my own.

Is the BIOS the problem and if so, where and how do I update it?

I installed Windows XP and after a few months of use, the hard drive got corrupted and I wasn't able to retrieve data. Then I bought a new hard drive and installed Windows again, this time a few months later it happened again. I installed Ubuntu Linux on it this time (full format) and soon after, GNOME would not boot, but I was able to enter a text based safe mode in Linux. Anyhow, I'm wondering if I've been having bad luck with hard drives, or if it could be another problem, such as bad jumper settings on my motherboard or overclocking or what not.

I have P,2 with 40 GB HD after all...I fined this HD was not working , now I have two 6 GB HD, and I boot from my Cd drive windows XP n but the computer tell me

i love Second Life but the minimum requirement for processor I am just a wee bit under (they recommend 2 gigs I got 1.80 it takes alittle bit for some graphics to get drawn .. but i can still play is there anyway besides anew puter (which I am working on) or a new processor that could help me?

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop computer. I damaged my cd drive because the drawer was open, I bumped into it and had to force it to close. Now my computer will not shut off. After I tell it to shut down, it just restarts all over again and I have to manually turn it off while it's shutting down. I tried to disable the drive and delete it, but when the computer restarts again, the drive reappears. Can I get someone to open up my computer and take out the cd drive all together?

I have a Dell PC with HArmon/ Kardon speakers. These have worked fine for a many years until last week. I have checked all the mutes, the cables and they all say that they are playing. I still can't hear it. The only thing i can think of is that the GeekSquad guy came last week and cleaned off some spyware but that is all. HELP????

I was playing a game and it froze my PC. I did a hard reset and now My computer is stuck on the Windows XP loading screen. and doesnt go any furture than that when i boot up. I can go into the bios and stuff, but i wont load in safe mode or any other mode its just stuck. Should i use my Windows XP CD to reinstall it or should i shell out major cash and let the Geek Squad fix it. Please help im already poor.

my computer's BIOS shows a processor temperature of 50-60 degrees most of the time and even higher after i've worked on it......

the specs are:

intel D865GVHZ motherboard,
intel celeron 2.26 ghz processor,
256 mb pc 2700 ddr sdram,
80 gb seagate barracuda harddisk,
samsung dvd/cdrw drive,
128 mb geforce 5200 agp graphics card......

should i invest in a larget heatsink n fan?...
will it be accomodated by my mainboard?...
please help me
i kno nothing about heatsinks and fans and their costs.....

Our accounts office has a pretty slow computer which has had a problem with its CD Rom. AN expert was called and he Installed a new LG CD rom with the reason that the "eye" of the former CD Rom had a problem. Now the CD Rom runs so loud it shakes the CPU once the PC is put on. Checking the specifications from the new CD Rom Package.... it states that its recommended for 256MB Ram system requirements. could it be the problem? The expert says its the fan which has the problem. I dont believe it. What do you think? The PC's has the following; pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 192 MB of RAM
