I bought a new computer last month with a Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G/2.1 Motherboard and 2 sticks of Kingston HyperX 512 MB DDR II 800 Ram.

I noticed yesterday during my boot sequence that the memory is only being recognised as 667 Mhz. Upon taking the computer to my supplier's lab, they told me that my bios version was causing the problem and they needed to upgrade that.

Four hours later they had still not solved the problem. Being a fairly proficient user myself, I would rather solve the problem on my own.

Is the BIOS the problem and if so, where and how do I update it?

Thanks

That board supports ddr2 800 according to specs here:

Try loading optimized defaults in BIOS. If this does not work, you may have to manually set the memory frequency in BIOS. My hunch is that your high performance memory's SPD is outside the normal settings of the motherboard BIOS but within the settings of most enthusiast motherboards. Your HyperX might require a bit higher voltage (Vdimm) to work at ddr2 800.

You can update (a.k.a "flash") the bios by going on the motherboard manufactures website and downloading their tool and following the instructions. If an update is available. HOWEVER...I would not recommend doing this unless you know exactly what you are doing. If it gets messed up in the middle of the update you are totally 100% screwed. Your motherboard will be toast and your computer will not work. I would let a professional handle it unless you can afford to buy a new motherboard and know how to build a computer.

Like the other people said you won't be able to see all 4gb no matter what but you should see more then 2.6. How do you know its a motherboard issue and not OS? Have you tried a live boot disc like knopix and see how much memory is recognized? What about bios how much memory is recognized there? No it doesn't matter what slots you put them in.

Meh .... I have upgraded and downgraded my bois a bunch of times ..... but anyhow just go to the bios and look it willl have a section for chosing the speed or auto ect .... im not sure of your mobo but it should have choices. Updating a bios is no big deal. My best guess is your mobo doesnt support 800
