I just built myself a high-end system. It's AMD X2 5600+ with 4GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card, and 500 GB HDD.

I had been using a rather cheap (~$25) heatsink until now. I decided to overclock and so I got $75 Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 heat-sink and some artic silver 5.

I put the system together yesterday around 5 and let the burn-in test run for about 3 hours. I was able to overclock the CPU by 7-8%.

My question: how long should I wait before trying to overclock again? I read some place that termal paste takes a while to settle down between the CPU and the heatsink, so that had me wondering.

How do I start windows? I bought it off internet, but I forgot to ask the seller.

Some help would be nice. It's just like another partition with Windows XP installed in it, I'm sure it can berun because it has a few "apple keyboard/mouse/etc support" files and stuff, and he had been using it himself.

Ok this is one for all you computer geniuses out there (sadly i'm not one of them!)....

Ok my problem is this. Something is amis with my pc...it started running really slowly for no reason. I have totally formatted it and re-installed a genuine copy of Windows XP home. The syptoms are it takes ages to open anything and when I'm playing my favourite game (splinter cell-double agent for anyone who's interested), the more I save and reload the game while playing the slower and slower the computer gets to the point where you can't use it and have to reboot. I thought that maybe the computer was writing to my ram and not my hard drive so it was gradually getting fuller and fuller the more I save but that's just my very uneducated guess.

It's a fairly recent pc (compaq pc world bought desktop) and it runs a 1.9 ghz motherboard with a gig of ddr ram and an nvidia 256 g force graphics card. I don't have anything on it to slow it down and it's not connected to the internet. HELP!!!

I have convinced my parents to buy me a brand new Mac for my birthday coming up at the end of May. I'm a graphic designer so while I have a full time job I would like to start doing freelance on the side and don't have the resources to do it right now. What I'm wondering is if anyone could share and problems or good experiences you have with the different computers.

The iMac comes with an Intel Core Duo Processor. Is this a better choice than say Unix?

Are there any designers out there that can give me any imput as to what I would need to start out doing freelance besides the obvious programs?

Any advice at all on what kind of Mac you think I should get would be great! Thanks!

My HP desktop runs good and performs just fine, even when playing games~but lately the fan/motor has kicked in really loud and VERY often, and I can't figure out why. I analyzed and ran the defrag after deleting unused files, but still if I open more than one window there goes the fan. It sounds like there is always a vaccuum going in my office!!! Can anyone help me out, any ideas would really help me out.

Long explanation short, I turn on my power bar, hit the power button on my tower, the computer turns on for about 2 seconds, then turns off like it was unplugged. Every once in awhile it will turn on fully, and when Windows XP begins to start [while on that starting black screen with the logo and blue bars that are moving from the left to the right] my keyboard and DSL lights turn off and then on, as if the computer has turned off and then on again. While these lights indicate that the computer is dissconnected or off, I hear the fans still spinning, the hard drive clicking, and those blue bars are still moving. Then it all turns off and I have to try a million times to get back to that point. I can get it to work using safe mode, but thats not really usefull.

This computer is just a simple "build if yourself" I got from PC club in Riverside, Ca. I have no clue what specific brand it may be, or how to find that info. Any help would be great as I am a student with little cash.

thanks

Lately, I hear sounds from the harddisk like the last sound you hear when you shut down the computer and the harddisk gets disconnected from the power (tuk).
When it makes this sound, the computer freezes for a second then it works. Or sometimes it keeps repeating like crazy until I have to turn off the power.
I'm not good with the hardware, so can anybody help and tell me why this happens?

So here's the thing...

I'm buying a new motherboard, strictly because the one I have doesnt have a slot that fits the new video card I bought. Can I take the processor off the old motherboard (its only 2 weeks old)?

Also, will I need anything else besides RAM, sound card, and video card?

And will I lose everything I have on my pc if I switch the motherboards?

Thanks so much!

I'm thinking of getting a Mac only because I have heard great things about them. I have spent the last 15 years on 3 different PCs and have found nothing but a lot of frustration. Mind you, I'm not technologically minded, so that could be it. Since I spend a great deal of time writing which (MAC or PC) is best? Thank you.
