Time to replace it. The laser will weaken over time. It may still be bright enough to read CDs but not bright enough to burn them. You can try running a lens cleaning CD first as, if your problem is really a dirty lens, you'll be back burning in no time. Downloading new drivers will do nothing since this is a hardware problem.

I have GOT to ask: Are you sure your drive is a burner? What you're describing is EXACTLY the result you would expect from an older cd drive.
Modern cd drives will read cd-r and -rw disks, but not older ones. Older ones can only read production (AKA: pressed) cd's.
And NO cd-rom reader will write to a cd-r/w. Only a burner can do that.
Post your cd-rom model number and I can tell you in 10 seconds flat what it can and can't do.

CD/DVD writers have a limited hours of use so if you have it for a while and have been burning CD's then it is mostlikely that the Laser that writes to the CD's have burned out.

Sounds like either the driver isn't correct or the drive itself has a hardware problem.
