Ok this is one for all you computer geniuses out there (sadly i'm not one of them!)....

Ok my problem is this. Something is amis with my pc...it started running really slowly for no reason. I have totally formatted it and re-installed a genuine copy of Windows XP home. The syptoms are it takes ages to open anything and when I'm playing my favourite game (splinter cell-double agent for anyone who's interested), the more I save and reload the game while playing the slower and slower the computer gets to the point where you can't use it and have to reboot. I thought that maybe the computer was writing to my ram and not my hard drive so it was gradually getting fuller and fuller the more I save but that's just my very uneducated guess.

It's a fairly recent pc (compaq pc world bought desktop) and it runs a 1.9 ghz motherboard with a gig of ddr ram and an nvidia 256 g force graphics card. I don't have anything on it to slow it down and it's not connected to the internet. HELP!!!

Sounds like its a problem with the game not releasing the memory that it had. You may want to check out the vendors website and check for a patch for that issue.

Did the symptoms start immediately after re-installing XP or after installing a particular program?

Could be the hard drive is knackered and getting worse as it gets warmer. If it's still under warranty get PC World to look at it. Unlikely to be writing only to RAM and not HD.

Quick thought. How full is the hard drive? Running out of space on the HD is pretty serious under later Windows versions. May need a larger drive or 2nd drive to move the virtual memory file onto.

I am assuming that you have scanned for spyware. Often having spyware on the PC will slow it - especially when not connected to the Internet. If the spyware can not find the Internet, it keeps trying and trying until it bogs down the PC.

Not much info to go, but best guess.
Is Dr Watson running by any chance? Right-click on your taskbar & open Task manager. Select 'processes' in the tab. You're looking for a process called: drwtsn32.exe If it's running...stop-it!

A good registry cleaner I use is CCleaner. It's a reliable tool to get rid of worms, trojams, malwares and viruses that affect your pc performances. Free download here http://bit.ly/UrAq8d

It is a possibility that it is a heat related issue.

If the processor is overheating, it will often times throttle its frequency down to protect itself.

In other words it will throttle from 1.9ghz down to more like 700mhz to cool down.

Take off the side panel and spray the heatsink and fans off with compressed air and then try it again.

If that doesn't solve it, repost.

You could try and test your RAM, to see if it is functioning correctly. Download the program memtest86 and load it per their directions and run the memory for at least 1.5 hours. See if it comes up clean. Here is the website: http://www.memtest86.com/ Good Luck
