Long explanation short, I turn on my power bar, hit the power button on my tower, the computer turns on for about 2 seconds, then turns off like it was unplugged. Every once in awhile it will turn on fully, and when Windows XP begins to start [while on that starting black screen with the logo and blue bars that are moving from the left to the right] my keyboard and DSL lights turn off and then on, as if the computer has turned off and then on again. While these lights indicate that the computer is dissconnected or off, I hear the fans still spinning, the hard drive clicking, and those blue bars are still moving. Then it all turns off and I have to try a million times to get back to that point. I can get it to work using safe mode, but thats not really usefull.

This computer is just a simple "build if yourself" I got from PC club in Riverside, Ca. I have no clue what specific brand it may be, or how to find that info. Any help would be great as I am a student with little cash.

thanks

No beeps.

I hear the fans turning on, everything sounds/acts normal for 2.6 seconds [I've timed it] and then its off.

To me it sounds like the Power Supply is not supplying correct voltage. I am assuming that you live in the Riverside area, if so, you can take your whole tower to PC Club and have them test the psu. More than likely it will attempt to reach full power then turn off (this is done without the psu being connected to the board)

If that tests out fine, the other issues could be bad memory or motherboard issues. Either way, the best bet for you would probably be to just take it to them and have them run a complete check on it.

First try unplugging the PC from power bar and plug it directly into a socket. Turn it on and see if still happens. If it still happens unplug the power cord and remove the side of the PC. Look at the capacitors on the Motherboard. Run your finger over the top of them all. They should feel flat to your touch. Also look to see if there are any with a brown fluid leaking out of the top. If there are some swollen or leaking this is prolly your trouble. You need to replace the MB. Or the CPU may be going bad. If it were beeping it could be the RAM. If the MB looks good and you have double checked to be sure all componets are securely seated. Plug the PC in and start it again.
Is the Hard drive clicking loudly or just normally? If it is clicking loudly it could be crashing. Do you have another PC you could put the HD in and see if that PC will start normally with it in?
Since your PC runs in safe mode try installing the OS again and doing a repair. But in order to do this you must be sure your CD drive is booting first. When you start the PC and start to hear the fans run hit the F1 key or the delete key to enter the BIOS, go to the tab that ives you the boot sequence and change it to CD drive first boot. Restart you computer and run from the CD. It will give you directions to follow. Don't freak out it will act lick a format reload, but it is just doing a repair. you do have a valid product key for your OS right? This is needed as it will ask for it.
If nothing working yet try removing a stick of RAM at a time and try to start PC. It is all a process of elimination.
Please email me if you run into trouble or have questions.

Start it in safe mode and disable the display card. Try it in normal mode. If this does not work disable the sound card from safe mode and so on until you find the offending item. It may simply be a driver problem. Also try with the dsl modem disconnected.

can only be 1 of 3 things
1) there is a disk, floppy, usb key or such and your computer is trying to boot from that or
2)the power supply is broken- hint do not open power supply
3)the conection from power supply to hard drive is damaged

I suggest you call your DSL provider for help. It sounds like it may be the problem. Good luck.

Does the computer beep as it is trying to start up. If it is, different beep patterns mean different things. If there are beeps, add a detail to your question with the exact beep pattern. Example:
long - short - short - long - long.

Ensure nothing is loose. Replace the PSU.
