I have convinced my parents to buy me a brand new Mac for my birthday coming up at the end of May. I'm a graphic designer so while I have a full time job I would like to start doing freelance on the side and don't have the resources to do it right now. What I'm wondering is if anyone could share and problems or good experiences you have with the different computers.

The iMac comes with an Intel Core Duo Processor. Is this a better choice than say Unix?

Are there any designers out there that can give me any imput as to what I would need to start out doing freelance besides the obvious programs?

Any advice at all on what kind of Mac you think I should get would be great! Thanks!

Just to let you know, I understand it is a sensative topic Mac vs. Windows and I'm not really looking for opinions on what you think is better. I'm simply trying to establish intelligence on what would be the best MAC computer for my needs. I have a Windows laptop that i use everyday. For DESIGNING purposes I really prefer Mac. For everything I else I prefer Windows. I am getting a Mac computer specifically for design, which in my opinion, is the smartest move because the Graphic Design world is in fact 90% Mac. So please, hold your opinions and just give me sound advice as to what would be a good designing MAC computer. (I've seen people get into fist fights over the whole Mac vs. Windows controversy and I don't want to see that here or anywhere else.)

Unfortunately Dr House, there are MORE people who use Mac for designing than PC. Like I said, I don't want to get into a Mac vs. Windows battle because as I've said before, it never ends pretty and no one can convince the other of their opinions. The fact of the matter is is I never ASKED for you advice on what YOU thought was better. I simply asked if you had an advice SPECIFICALLY on Mac computer good and bad. You gave me a detailed list of reasons as to why NOT to buy one. I don't WANT your post because it was simply useless to me. You avoided the question and went right to what I DIDN'T want. So if anything, please remove any post from this question as yours are useless to me. And if you've been in the business for however many years as you say you have been, then you would realize that the design world is in fact dominated by Mac computers. It's a matter of preference and if i wanted your preference I would have asked for it. Please don't post to my questions anymore.

A 24" imac with 2gb of memory would be a good choice. If you can't afford that, get the 20" but don't skimp on the memory. The Intel Core Duo Processor allows you to run Windows programs via bootcamp but I recommend using an application called Parallels. I use it and it works well.
BTW, unix is an operating system. Mac OSX is built on a Unix core.

I am simply pointing out facts, if you want an overpriced, overrated piece of junk, feel free! Its not a matter of what I think, Its what I know. I have been in the field for 30 years! Feel free to buy what you want. You are apparently too close minded to deserve the post! As far as your graphic design idea that Mac makes 90 percent, you are sadly mistaken! 90 percent of the design software on the market is designed for windows! Open your eyes and look! I doubt seriously that no one is buying it or they wouldnt be producing it.
You from Oklahoma or what? My original post was written by me for people like you! As I said, I have been in the business for over 30 years and know what I am talking about. If you choose to buy a Mac, feel free! Its your loss, not mine! You can either be mislead by Apple and the puny 4 percent of users who buy them, or you can use your head for somethin besides a place to put a hat. It matters not to me....
P.S. dont worry about me posting to you again, I make it a habit not to try and help idiots....
