My HP PC desktop power supply failed so rather then get it fixed I bought a new Gateway. Having lots of files that I wanted off the HP hard drive, I bought an enclosure and put HP hard drive in it in hopes of being able to access these files which mainly consisted of pictures. Under My Computor, the HP HD shows up with the content used but when I open it my old files don't seem to be there. Is my HD bad? Very frustrating. Please help.

I'm looking to upgrade my ram because what came with my computer is inefficient. I know I need DDR2 ram. I'm going to get 512mb. That is what I do know. What I don't know though is if all of the other details matter. I realize there many be performance or quality differences among manufacturers, but I'm not asking about that. Example: on the net I found "
US Modular 512MB PC4200 DDR2 SODIMM Memory" what does PC4200 mean? is that standard? What does SODIMM mean? Is that important? What about where i see 533 Mhz? does that vary and do I need a certain Mhz? Thanks in advance.

If you read my last few questions (You don't need too) you will realize I am getting a new PC. Cooling is one of the most important features for a case. The case I am looking at is this

here is a review on it also. URL for review below.

with 5x120MM fans and 1x200MM fan. I am looking to get an 8800GTS video card probably the 320MB version. So I am worried about it being so big and causing bad airflow plus its powerful and produces lots of heat anyhow.

How much does liquid cooling cost to setup in a case. When stacked against fan cooling how good is it? What can go wrong? is it easy to manage once its properly setup. Are there differnt types of liquid cooling?

Everytime I turn on my PC windows will freeze during the XP load up screen or within a minute after it has managed to load the desktop (the cursor just freezes). This does not happen at other times...and the only way to get past it in the past was to keep the computer running for a bit in its crashed state before restarting. I guess it needed a warm up. But now it seems to often freeze even during restarts when the computer has been on.

So I am thinking of getting a new MB but I want to be sure that is the issue (I am guessing it could be the HD or even the CPU, graphics card, ram etc...I wouldn't know).

The only way to shut down the PC is with the power supply so often the HD needs checking or the boot sector fixed or even a complete OS reinstall due to a neverending bluescreen/restart cycle when loading.

I would give more info if I knew what was important, but thanks for any help.

Hi i have just a thing come up saying virtual memory to low.
It's never come up before and i can say there is not a lot of programs that run on my computer, it's not full. I dont download stuff and i defrag often and do disc clean-ups.
I have read other comments about virtual memory to low and what to do but when you don't know anything about computers and people say press this, go to this, do that without explaining properly word for word then it's difficult and i don't want to mess up my computer.
When explaining to people who don't know a lot on this subject, in other words, i would be grateful to someone who can actually talk me through it as so to speak.

A bit like .. first do this, next do that and so forth..
Not saying i am thick but some people just know more about computers than others. Grateful for any help.
Regards
Julie

I'm planning on formatting my hard drive because it is virtually unusable due to viruses, but I don't want to pay for a new operating system. I am currently running Windows XP, and I am wondering if I will still have it installed after I clear the HDD. XP came loaded onto my computer when I bought it, so I have no installation disc. I have one for another computer, but it has been used already ( that means I can't use it again, right?) I really don't want to pay the hundred dollars or so for a new version of XP.

I just installed more RAM two 512MB dimms with the same specs. Now when i start vista it says that windows has failed to boot. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. please repair your installation.
Now I switched the computer off from the main power supply and then restarted it and now it works fine.
Should i be worried?

I have a 500w psu but it is generic. Aside from the sticker, how can I tell if it is really 500W? So far, it is working ok and I've subjected it to a stress test (literally on 24 hrs for 6 days d/l-ing torrents) and it is still ok. I have 2hdds, 3 120mm case fans, 2 optical drives, 2 ddr sticks, a sempy, an msi mobo, and a 7300gt that is connected to one of the molexes of the psu. Theoretically it should run on 380W on full load but I still can't tell if it is a 500W. I'm afraid it'll go "low power" on me one of these days.

Oh yeah, what's the longevity of the generic psu? I mean can it last as long as branded ones or be as durable as branded ones? Thanks!

I'm purchasing a desktop computer in a month or so, but the websites are being very vague about explaining what terms mean or how they relate to the preformance of the computer.

What I need is a good desktop computer that can effectively browse the internet, process text, and run imaging programs, like photoshop and Macromedia Flash MX.
I don't play a lot of PC video games, so a super graphics card is not needed, just one that will support a fair amount of cartooning/image editing.
I also do a lot of web design, but all I use for that is notepad and Firefox, and those are not hard to run on the computer I have now (which is fairly low-end)
The most important aspects are that it runs well with image programs, microsoft office (no mac/linux-related suggestions, please), and various internet browsers.
