First make sure your computer boots from the cd rom, to do this you will need to get into the bios setup
on the second page (advanced setup) look for first boot up sequence, your cd drive needs to be the first boot up,

then place the xp cd rom into the drive and re boot, it will start up xp let it carry on all the way, it will find the old xp you have on your hard drive and ask if you want to install it are repair it just hit enter
eventually it will come up with the information about your hard drive read what it says, delete ALL partitions it then ask you to make a new partitions say yes, then it will ask you to format the drive answer yes, do the format in NTFS system. not 32 bit system

it will format the hard drive, and begin installing xp
you will NOT damage your hard drive

go ahead and wipe your hard drive clean with the software. once you are finished, put the xp install cd into your computer. reboot. when you see a message at the top of your screen (it only lasts about 3 seconds) "press any key to boot off of cd" press spacebar or some other key. you should be starting the xp install now. when it asks about partitions, just delete any on your hard drive and put 1 new partition on that uses up all of the free space. (it won't leave you without blank space to put games/music/pictures/files on, it will write a filesystem on that space so you can use it). then, just answer any of the other questions. you can't use a mouse on the initial blue part, but you can in the rest of the install. whenever you have to reboot mid-installation, don't press any key to boot off of the cd, but keep the cd in the computer though.

insert the xp disk, reboot the computer, it will bring up the install screen for xp, and ask do you want to repair a previous xp instalation, or reinstall , chose reinstall, and it will ask you if you want to reformat the computer.. follow on screen prompts from there.. make sure you go to windows update after, and run it over, and over agin untill you have all the updates for it ..
