It is a back-up drive or something to help the computer during start-up. There are many forms of boot disks; floppy disks, CD's, DVD's, and possible flash drives. If your computer has a problem starting up then it needs a boot disk. The boot disk will load it's default settings into the computer and start the computer for you. The chances are, you will have to use the boot disk from then on or when it is required.
