you should shut your computer off periodically.

Why?

1) A lot of things you do on your computer such as installing new devices or programs, configuration settings, file changes, additions or deletions to the Registry and other configuration files, don't take effect until you restart your computer.

2) Programs need a certain amount of memory to operate, and this is allocated when the program is started. That memory, and any other resource required by the program, is not available again until the program closes and releases those resources.

3.)Some programs, no matter how big the company name, or how popular, or how expensive, may have a glitch or a bug that will prevent the resources from being released properly. Thus your available resources may become depleted and you'll see memory errors or illegal operation errors start to pop up. Turning off your computer will clear memory and reallocate resources upon startup again

I fixed many computers just because they didn't boot their computers periodically.

most people would say no, but you have to be careful, especially in the summer when its warmer, hard drives, your processor, video card power supply make alot of heat that in the long run could reduce the life of your computer, especially your hard drive . People have to remember fans and computer parts are sensitive and don't last forever

No, but leaving it running for long periods of time will waste power and let memory leaks build up and slow things down.

Only to save energy, I leave all ours on 24/7 as they do remote backups and simulations

I usually put mine on hibernate, it is energy efficient and it boots up quickly to exactly how you left it.
