the specs of my machine say it holds 1 gb of memory and the memory manufacturer say it holds 2 gb - (crucial) which is it?

It sounds like 1 GB is the amount of memory currently installed, and Crucial is telling you the maximum the machine can take (2 GB). From your question, I can't be totally sure though.

To clarify, could you post back with some more details and tell where you are getting the 1 GB figure from? "Specs of your machine" is kind of vague ... is this coming from a manual or from something like Control Panel --> System Information?

Or you can go back to Crucial, re-run the system scan, and pay close attention to the information it gives. The Crucial scan should tell you how much RAM you currently have installed AND what your machine's maximum is.

I'd check my Owner's manual or go to your computer's manufacturer's website for Specs.
