In thoery, yes you can. However, it's a lot more complicated than that. Some motherboards can be really really fussy about DDR RAM - what might work on one board, won't necessarily work on another.
Things like whether one stick is ECC and the other non-ECC, latency, registered /unregistered all makes a difference.
When buying memory, it's usually pretty wise to consult your Motherboad manufacturers website to check for compatible brands.
Also, if you are looking to run it as 2 gig in dual-channel mode, really the memory should have been bought as a "matched pair" - ie a pair of stick from the same manufacturer that have been tested with each other to ensure compatibility.
If one has a fater sped rating than the other (ie one is DDR333/PC2700 and he other is DDR400/PC3200, they will work at the lower speed of 333 - this is true of many things with PCs.
You may also need to reset the CMOS settings on the motherboard - this is done by removing the little round battery, switching a jumper cap for a coupe of seconds, then replacing the battery. You'll then have to go into your BIOS set-up (pres & hold "del" while booting), to reset date & time etc, and just give everything the once-over, make sure the settings are right.
Always buy trusted, well-known brands.

Hey there! Yes you should be able to mix them as long as your motherboard supports both types of ram (speed wise.) If they are different speeds, one should clock down to the lower speed of the two.
Also, if you are interested in running your DDR in dual channel mode for better performance, you'll need the two sticks of ram to be the same size and be at the same speed. Good Luck!

Depends on the the TYPE of RAM you are trying to mix. For instance you cannot mix pc2100 with pc2700. All of your RAM modules must be of the same type.

Yes. You just need to check that your new ram is at least as fast as your existing ram.

YES, but they are most likely to run in single channel mode.

it might paintings high quality, yet: If the board is able to duel channel reminiscence, then the sticks must be matched. IE, same length, velocity, and case latency. different then that, the reminiscence ought to paintings merely high quality. you have got 2.5 gigs working, merely no longer in duel channel. Duel channel hurries up the processing of information in that it makes use of extra of the structures busses.
