It depends on your mother boards. Newer mother boards come with both SATA and IDE, that means you can put upto 4 IDE disks (2 Primary and 2 Secondary) and 2 SATA disks. If your mother board supports RAID, you can go for more.

If you have hit your limit on your mother board, you might want to try for external hard drives, where you can put any number based on the number or USB/Firewire ports you have on your computer.

Most computers have 2 connectors which can handle 2 drives each, so a max of 4 for desktop computers. There are such things as Add-in cards (PCI) that can add up to 4 each.

Be aware that the power requirements on having so many drives might be a little severe.

It depends on the individual computer and whether there are any other drives (like CD drives) installed. In theory, with no CD drives, I could put 10 harddrives in my computer. There are, however, only 5 internal drive bays to put drives into.

Here's how that's possible. My motherboard has one port for IDE/PATA drives, which supports 2 devices max. (1 IDE port = 2 drives.) It has 4 ports for SATA drives, one drive per port. I also have an addon IDE/PATA card with 2 ports. (Which thus supports 4 drives max.)
So that breaks down as follows:
2 IDE/PATA drives from motherboard port
4 SATA drives from motherboard ports
4 IDE/PATA drives from IDE/PATA PCI card

Right now I've got 4 drives installed. 1 SATA drive on a motherboard port, 1 IDE/PATA hardrive on the motherboard port, a DVD-ROM/CD writer combo drive on one of the IDE/PATA addon card's ports and 1 DVD burner on the IDE/PATA addon card's other port.

Current computers are likely to have support for at least 4 total drives (including CD drives) and may support 8 or even more depending on the motherboard. The case is a different story however. Most "off the shelf" cases I've seen have 2 internal bays for harddrives and one or two external bays for CD drives.

And of course there are always USB drives. And I'm not sure if there is a limit to the number of USB drives you can have connected. Though multiple drives connected through hubs may transfer data slower due to multiple devices sharing the same bandwidth.

You can put in as many that will fit and you have power to run. Default configurations have 2 IDE or 4 SATA ports onboard. This is expandable with addon controller cards. As long as you have an empty expansion port (PCI/E), you can keep putting in addon cards to support more drives.

Depends on the motherboard, if it has just IDE or if it has IDE and SATA or any other combination of interfaces. What I would suggest is to look up your motherboard on the internet and it should tell you at the manufacturers website how many devices you can put in it.

Hi. Usually up to four, then you run out of IDE slots. Of course you can add USB based flash drives but you asked about 'hard drive'.

Depends on what type of motherboard you have, common boards support at least 2 , you can partition each drive to make more.
