Desktops - February 2007

i restarted my machine last night and when it restarted, it came back to a screen where only my mouse icon showed up on the desktop. I don't know what to do and everytime i restart it just comes up back to the same issue. Any ideas?

i disabled my friends usb port and wanted to re-enable it as my pen drive was not getting ejected.........i forgot that he has a wireless unit and when the computer is restarted nothing is happening......the BIOS recognises the keyboard and mouse but not the operating system as the USB port is disabled..........is there any way that i can solve this problem without using a standard keyboard and mouse which i would have to take from my PC all the way to his house................?

HP Pavilion 510n I rebooted it and now it just makes loud sounds of reading but sounds bad and its vibrates when i hold it to make the sounds stop.

Last night I was on my desktop and it was working fine... after that I decided to turn the computer off and go to bed... so I did.. Then a little bit later I decided that I want to check something... I turned on the computer and its running... then the logo "COMPAQ" came on and then the screen went blank.. I tried to restart it over and over again but it didnt work.. the last time I just turned it on and let it sit..so then the screen is still blank it a msg came up and it says

uh oh what do I do?? could my computer gotten sick?? a possible virus??
I didnt uninstall anything..

I have a Sony Vaio VGC-RB30 computer, the factory dvd rw drive is a DW-D22A.

The drive will no longer read dvds at all but will read cds and I've been troubleshooting it for weeks, trying updated firmwares, etc. Nothing has worked so I want to buy a new drive.

I need a recommendation for a good replacement. And also I need to know, are all dvd rw drives universal, meaning can I be sure whatever I get will fit right in the computer?

My mic jack wont work at all. I even bought a new mic and plugged it in to make sure it wasn't the mic that wasn't working and I'm positive it's the computer. Anyone have any idea how much it will cost to repair?

These are my current computer's spec:

Sony VAIO VGC-RC210G
3.0 GHz Intel Pentium D 930 CPU, 800 MHz FSB, ATI Radeon X300 graphics controller (128 MB dedicated memory)
2 GB (4 slots w/ 512 MB each) PC2-4200 533 MHz RAM,
620GB Internal, 250GB External hard drive, 7 USB 2.0, 2 FireWire, S-Video

So my question is, even though the manual says that memory is expandable to 2 GB, can I install a 1 GB memory module that's PC2-4200 533 MHz or no? Thanks

When I turn on the computer, all the sound system works.
After a few minutes though, the screen suddenly changes to the "classic view", and I can no longer hear any sounds.
When I go to sound, speech, and audio settings, it states that I have no audio device.

There is no virus on my computer, and I have already tried system restore.

Can anyone please help me with this problem?

When i look under my computer and view my details it shows i have about 984 mhz processor. i looked up my processor on the internet to see how powerful my processor is supposed to be, its supposed to be a 2.0 Ghz.
the reason i ask is cause im trying out a new game and it requires 1.8 Ghz. the game runs slow. is there any way i can maximize my computers processor?

I just got a brand new computer and it came with windows vista. I have tried to download a few different things and i havent been able to get any to work. Could this be the windows vista because i know i did it right because i have done it before on my moms computer. Or is there somethingi have to set or unset so i can get them to download.
