So you're getting blank desktop it seems. It has a number of causes, but what's not working that's causing that is that explorer.exe is not running or is unable to run, or a related component is corrupted.

One easy thing to try is to do CTRL+ALT+DELETE on that blank desktop, which should bring up Task Manager. Click File then New Task (Run), and then run Explorer.exe. That might bring back the desktop.

Another option is to run MSConfig from the same New Task (Run) and then disable all non-Microsoft services in MSConfig before rebooting.

Still, you need to look into the underlying problem. What have you installed recently? You need to uninstall them, especially if they're system related, like antivirus or antispyware programs. I'd also uninstall any Google programs you may have installed recently.

My first suggestion would of been to try to restart the computer and but it seems like you have already tried this one. Number 2 on my list would be to restart again and hit f8 while it is booting up and try safe mode and if safe mode works if you installed any previous programs uninstall them now, if you didn't install any other programs go ahead and do a system restore point to a previous day and reboot the computer and that should take care of the problem, if it wont let you boot into safe mode reboot again and this time hit f8 and choose last known good configuration and it works the same way and system restore does under windows. Feel to mail me with any other question. or if that didn't work. I have yet to have a problem stump me. Just look at my best answers.

Oh oh! If XP, try booting into safe mode by tapping the F8 key rapidly until you see a screen that says, among other things, Last Known Good Configuration. Try that and cross your fingers.

If that didn't work repeat and choose Safe mode. if you can get to the desktop, go to Start > Programs > accessories > System Restore and restore to the day before your PC crashed.

If you can't get to the desktop, I hope you have copied all of your personal data to CD or DVD. The last option is to re-install Windows.

For starters, I will need to know what operating system you are running to help you the best. What kind of machine, like dell, hp, or whatever? But, with most, you can hit the F-8 button before windows starts to load. Then you can select the start in safe mode. If you are running windows xp, then you can go to the start menu and then select help and support. Next, check the item that says something like undo changes to your computer with system restore. You might try the item when you select the F-8 Button that says last known good configuration. That should do it.

What windows are you running? If it is Windows XP, there seems to be that same issue when the newest updates are installed. You can go to add/remove programs and uninstall the latest updates. When you have the add/remove programs up, make sure and click the box on top that says "show updates", scroll all the way to the bottom and delete all the ones that were installed when you noticed the problem.

Hope this helps!

when you restart the computer if you are using windows 2000 or XP press F8 and then choose safe mode with networking when the computer logs in to safe mode go to Start click Run and type COMMAND then when the command shows type CHKDSK /R and then press Enter and it will ask if you like to schedule for CHKDSK next time the computer restarts to check for errors between the option of (Y/N) you simply type Y for yes press enter and restart the computer and let it check for errors!

You must be having the Discovery CD. Did you try that way. I know this happened to me with my HP and Compaq Laptops and I need to take to the shop they fixed. Price over $50.

Do you have a recovery CD? Time to reinstall the OS.

Call Geek Squad, or take it to your local Best Buy or Circuit City.
