Defragging doesn't clear up space just reorganizes the files better. A simple way to free up disk space is to uninstall programs you no longer use. Look in Start, Control Panel, Add remove Programs. After you have removed what you can there, Click on Start, then select Run and enter cleanmgr and press enter.

Uninstall any programs you don't need, especially if you have them backed up and can re-install.
Delete any old files, back up others to cd or other removable storage, or online storage.

Then run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool and let it back up the registry, then use the Cleaner.

Use the advanced tools to stop all your software loading on Startup, you only need Windows and your security software.

Reduce the space taken up by your recycle bin.
Right click on the Recycle bin, select Properties, and move the slider down. Click Apply then OK.

Finally, defragment the hard drive at Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.
