I have a Sony Vaio VGC-RB30 computer, the factory dvd rw drive is a DW-D22A.

The drive will no longer read dvds at all but will read cds and I've been troubleshooting it for weeks, trying updated firmwares, etc. Nothing has worked so I want to buy a new drive.

I need a recommendation for a good replacement. And also I need to know, are all dvd rw drives universal, meaning can I be sure whatever I get will fit right in the computer?

As far as compatability, any internal dvd drive will fit fine. They are relatively easy to replace.

Most drives are the same size.

Look for a DVD burner at http://www.newegg.com when you do the search, you can SORT it out BY RATING, so you see what other people think are the BEST.

OR, you can go to STAPLES and buy one. They sell a SONY DVD Burner with Double Layer burning for about $85. The good part about Staples is their return policy. If you don't like it, just take it back. (hold on to that receipt).

Good luck and Happy Computing!

They are pretty universal, DVD drives are just the evolution of CD drives and those connect to the internal cable that is used by the hard drive so those are pretty much standard. There does exist exceptions, like external (usb, firewire).
