I need to install a new motherboard on my PC, my current one is dead.

1) How do I know which MoBo is compatible with my computer? Am I able to only buy certain kinds? What specs should I be looking for? I'm not looking for an upgrade, just something that works. And is the general price range for that? I have an emachines that's 2.5 years old.

2) Are they hard to install? I'm pretty good at figuring things out, and I know how to install everything else, like a PSU, RAM, video cards, drives, etc, but I've never tried a motherboard. Is that simple to do or is it best done by a repair shop?

3) At one place I went to the guy said that after the motherboard is installed, the computer won't just start up, he needs to fix the software too and that would be around $60. He said you either have to fix the software or install the OS (XP home edition) all over again. Is this true? I've never heard of that. The only thing wrong with the PC is that it needs a new MoBo. Has anyone heard that?

I will be getting a free upgrade disc of Windows Vista Home premium in the mail soon. My computer is an eMachines T5212 running Windows XP MCE 2005, 1 GB RAM (128 MB is shared with onboard video) and a Pentium D 805 dual core processor at 2.6 GHz. I plan to get a dedicated video card and upgrade to 2 Gigs of RAM in the future but I would like to run it now.

My motherboard usb connectors went out. Since then I have bought a PCI card so I could have usbs on the outside of the computer, however, I still have equipment that needs to be connected directly to the motherboard. Are there PCI cards that I can connect this type of equipment to or some other option. Preferably, I need to connect a card reader and 2 sets of usb ports. Each one of the devices connects to the 9 pin usb port.

I recently wasnt able to have my media player work when i installed a new motherboard, I went and reformatted the hard drive did all the driver updates for everything and still didnt work. Due to a corrupt windows file I had to reformat again. This time i checked my media player right after formatting and it worked. It worked up untill I installed my nvidia geforce 6200. I went and got the newest update for that but i am still unable to stream videos. So I would like to know if anything whats left to do?

Everytime i try and uninstall any program from the control panel, rundll pops up and uses 100% of cpu usage and thats it. Nothing uninstalls, the comp just stays at 100% usage with everything running extremely slow no matter how long i wait. I dont have any viruses or any type of ware ( i just reformated my disk ) so i know its not the problem. Currently i do use Zone alarm security suite which has some program features and i do use tuneup utilities which has an uninstall feature (which gives the same results resource rundll hog). Those are the only two programs i have that have any connection to any program. This problem is really starting to bug me because most of the time im just uninstalling manually (deleting program files/registry) of whatever program. Any suggestions? Much thanks in advance. Oh and the rundll stalled even before the reformat.

As soon as I boot my computer up, it starts to make a grinding noise. This happens only sometimes. Not every time.

When I shut it down completely, then restart it, it works perfectly fine..

What I have noticed is that the shut-down time is longer when it makes this grinding noise... It takes about 2 minutes to shut down.. When everything is fine, it takes only 15 seconds to shut down..

What could be wrong?

I've partitioned my hard drive and the letters F and G have been assigned by default as D and E are used for my DVD/RW and CD-ROM respectively.
I'd prefer to have D and E for my new partitions, how do I change the letters assigned to the optical drives so that they become available to assign to the partitions?

I have a Quasar(m56786)km400a ver 2.0 mother board with an amd 3000+ processor. On a Packard Bell i media 1504.A while a go my pc started blepping then freezing and/or shutting down.I eventually worked it out to be overheating.(I had a house fan blowing in the open side).
I have just carefully put some thermal paste on the processor and this did the trick .however,I am running speed fan and it says temp 1 - cpu o.k. temp 2 - (unknown) 50c. temp 3 hard drive o.k. temp 4(unknown) 50c.I would like to know what temp 2 and 4 are, I think one is outside case,I would also like to get these temps down.i would also like to know of any good motherboard temp monitor programs. Also, What is that square heatsink (3cm x 3cm) with two pegs on it just underneath the main processor? (how do you remove the heatsink? does it require thermal paste) I think it is one of the high temp readings (temp 2 maybe)
Many Thanks
