I have a Quasar(m56786)km400a ver 2.0 mother board with an amd 3000+ processor. On a Packard Bell i media 1504.A while a go my pc started blepping then freezing and/or shutting down.I eventually worked it out to be overheating.(I had a house fan blowing in the open side).
I have just carefully put some thermal paste on the processor and this did the trick .however,I am running speed fan and it says temp 1 - cpu o.k. temp 2 - (unknown) 50c. temp 3 hard drive o.k. temp 4(unknown) 50c.I would like to know what temp 2 and 4 are, I think one is outside case,I would also like to get these temps down.i would also like to know of any good motherboard temp monitor programs. Also, What is that square heatsink (3cm x 3cm) with two pegs on it just underneath the main processor? (how do you remove the heatsink? does it require thermal paste) I think it is one of the high temp readings (temp 2 maybe)
Many Thanks

It seems that your motherboard may be on it's way out. I have seen machines from Packard Bell and Advent (both DSG exclusive brands), exhibiting the exact same symptoms that you have described, before total system failure. If the computer was working flawlessly under its current configuration, and has now started misbehaving for no clear reason. A fault on the main board is the most likely culprit. I would stop using the computer until you are able to replace the motherboard, as often when they fail they take other components with them. Alternatively, if you purchased an extended warranty, I would take it back to PCWorld or Dixons and have them take care of it. I would not explore any extensive rectification options, as the 1504 is now a 3 year old, discontinued machine and doesn't carry a high residual value. Good luck.

You should get a monitor program from the motherboard manufacturer. They all seem to have one of one type or another.
AMD cpu's tend to run hot....40c to 60c seems quite normal.

If you have developed an overheating problem then it is usually the dirt and dust collecting in the cpu heatsink and fan areas also don't forget the power supply case. That can be a big source of heat and can get as much dirt and dust inside but hard to see.
Last week I bought a new(and cheaper!!) cpu fan. When I installed it my average cpu temp dropped over 10c
(AMD 2800barton).

My first suggestion would be try a new fan on your cpu.
