Desktops - January 2007

i have a computer that is pretty virus-ridden and really can't be saved. i've managed to back up everything before it stopped accepting usb drives and writable discs, which is good. i have a bunch of discs that dell sent me a while ago in order to do this. i have... (1) dell dimension resource cd, with device drivers, diagnostics and utilities, and computer documentations (2) reinstallation cd - windows xp professional service pack 2 (3) installation disc for roxio easy cd creator (4) disc for reinstalling dell tools system software - antivirus, support, multimedia, internet software. // now, which should i use first, and what exactly do i do? i know i should probably just call dell, but i hate phone support. i'd rather do it on my own.

or, alternately, where on the web can i find instructions to do this?

...that is used 5 days a week, 9 hours a day? I ask because lately we have been having a spate of hard-disk errors on PCs in our office and they all seem to be around the same age.

I have built my last computer from used components. It has saved me money over the years. But it's gotten to where I can buy a new or slightly used PC for almost close to same price. I have found PC's on eBay, but after shipping. I can buy a new or reconditioned PC a manufacturer may have. All I want is a entry level P4 with a valid XP licence and gently used. Operating software is another problem buying used. Is it possible to buy a high end P3 or entry P4 with XP licence from a reputable seller at around $200?

I'm beginning to see flash drives that have as much as some older HDD and was wondering is there a max size (GB) for flash drives?

How do they differ from a HDD? In what way do they differ? I know flash drives don't have mechanical parts like HDD's but I don't understand the difference otherwise.

ok i have bought a new atx case as i am looking to replace my case! the case i bought comes with a 400 watt power supply and the case i have now is a 300 watt - could someone tell me - whats the difference? do i need to be 300? can i use the 400? will it make things any diferent in any way? was just gonna sell it on ebay and instal the 300 but if the 400 improves my pc in someway let me know folks

well the sound was working perfect on my pc. then i upgraded to xp pro and suddenly i can t hear any sounds. what is wrong? the volume is up to full and the speakers are in the correct port on the mobo. i havent got a sound card.

I tried playing Doom 3 but it was unplayable. The backlight was so bright that every shadowy area (there everywhere in Doom 3) looked like it was glowing gray. This thing advertises 1000:1 contrast ratio but I couldn't find a way to get a true black out of it.

To upload videos from my camcorder and my question is, I know the type of firewire port to buy..... but is it easy to install a firewire port? I bought this dual processor Pentium III slot 1 motherboard since it's kind of odd and would look neat in a windowed case...

Anyways, it is actually cheaper nowadays to buy a Pentium III slot 1 processor with a FSB of 133 mhz instead of 100 mhz.

I'm wondering if it's possible to use a 133 mhz Pentium III processor in that motherboard,
if so will it work at it's proper clock speed,
and will it affect the RAM.
