I tried playing Doom 3 but it was unplayable. The backlight was so bright that every shadowy area (there everywhere in Doom 3) looked like it was glowing gray. This thing advertises 1000:1 contrast ratio but I couldn't find a way to get a true black out of it.

You can lower the brightness but then you lose out on color fidelity.

And sorry to hear I too thought that monitor was da BOMB!

That sounds like a problem with:
1. The monitor itself - Send it back to Dell!

2. Graphics Card itself - Try a different card if possible or plug the monitor into someone elses PC?

3. Software - Do you have the latest direct X and graphics drivers?

My friend has the 2405 and Doom 3 looks amazing, I am really sorry to hear about your problem especially as I have just ordered the same monitor lol!
