my computer stops responding when i turned it on. It stops at the welcome screen. I could access safe mode but I dont know what to do with in the safe mode. Thanks

and currently i am using 2 slots of RAM . each is 512. so i am using 2 slots of 512 RAM. Is it possible my system was crashed because I used 2 slots of RAM??

You should be fine with 1 GB ram....

It could be that certain files needed to load Windows XP have become corrupted and need to be repaired.... Have you un-installed any apps lately...? You would need to XP cdrom to repair the OS...

It could be that you updated a driver recently and this is causing the problem.... You would then need to go to SAFE mode and uninstall the driver....

Since you mention RAM, did you perform an upgrade lately... Since this could also affect XP when it loads....

Of course there is spyware, virus, registry corruption, etc...

Try this.

Turn your computer off for 20 seconds. Turn it on. At the moment when appears the logo of the manufacturer, press fast repeatedly the space key. In the screen will appear a text in black and white that gives you options.
Click the one that says: Start Windows in the way it worked the last time, or the one that says: Start windows normally. (Not exactly these words). If unsuccessful, try doing the same with the keys F8 and F10.

do a system file check first

to ensure that the core files are ok

click start-run

type cmd

at prompt type sfc/scannow

u might need toinsert xp cd.

possibly a driver issue.

go to control panel and check system properties- device manager for any exclamtation marks.

also could be faulty antivirus software rather than viruses. if you have norton delete it and replace it with

Its likely a virus, the virus tries to prevent you from being to do anything about it. If you can run anti virus in safe mode, do so.
