If you have type of anti-virus do a complete sweep.
If you have any type of spyware do a complete sweep.

If you have both then try and doing a system restore.
you will need to go into the following:
start
all programs
accessories
system tools
at the bottom is system restore this will walk you through the process.

We'd need a little more info.
Are you getting an error message?
It could be anything from a software issue, virus issue, or hardware issue that's causing it to crash.

I got your info
Ok,
I've done some google-ing and ppl.exe is an 'un-desirable' program.

I know your comp keeps shutting down so doing a full virus scan is out of the question. Instead
as soon as you boot up, press control+alt+delete at the same time. This will bring up the task
manager.
In the task manager go to the processes tab. Find ppl.exe. Click on it, then click End
Processes. Then check through the processes again. Sometimes those types of processes will re-start.
keep ending it. Eventually, it'll stop popping back up.

Now, for spools.exe. That's a malware, probably included in a recent download. Did you
download software such as LymeWire?
Close spools.exe through the task manager the same as ppl.exe.

As soon as you end both of those processes:
1) go to tools, internet options, and under the general tab you can delete all of your
temporary internet items. This includeds cookies, history, and offline items. Empty everything.
2) after you complete step 1, go empty your desk top trash can
3) after you complete step 2, go into your control panel to add/remove programs. remove any
recently downloaded files, such as lymewire or games you've gotten recently.

After you get all of this done you should be able to run a virus scan.

Do it asap.

You may want to try this virus scan first

gabes answer was good but i would recommend you only do system restore after you try this.

do the anti virus and spyware thing first preferably with norton or mcafee(they do both)
if problem persists, download or buy a system mechanic like wincleaner oneclick.
this will repair all your registries and get rid of ones not in use along with a hell of a lot of other things .
if this doesent work do the system restore to a point in time when you had no problems

You must have some viruses, an dspyware on your system to have your computer lock up that bad. You will probablly have to reformat it, unless you can get into safe mode and repair it all.
