Look out on sites like http://www.tomshardware.com or http://www.anandtech.com for in-depth reviews.

The Pentium D and Core 2 Duo are the dual-core processors available from Intel. The Pentium D is outdated. It is basically two P4 processors on one die. Most run pretty hot and aren't really all that great in performance.

The Core 2 Duo recently came out. It runs at half the power which means it also runs a lot cooler. A 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo can easily beat a 3GHz Pentium D. Go to those sites I mentioned above for a review.

The Core 2 Duo is the superior processor. While clock speed is a factor you can no longer accurately judge a processors performance against a different processor by just the clock speed.

The higher end Core 2 Duo processors, from the E6400 and up also have 4 meg of cache rather than just 2 meg and that is a significant performance boost.

Check out the benchmarking at www.tomshardwareguilde.com. You will find that the Core 2 Duo processors give you more bang for you buck than anything else out on the market right now including other Intel processors. For instance the E6700 which is selling for about $540 or so will outperform the AMD FX-60 which was selling for over $800 when the Intel chip first appeared.

Good luck.

your waisting your time with intel. AMD is the only true processor. since the pentium there have been a dozen or more different pentium I and so on up to the new processors. if you want a reliable true speed processor go with AMD. they are exactly what they say they are.
