I've partitioned my hard drive and the letters F and G have been assigned by default as D and E are used for my DVD/RW and CD-ROM respectively.
I'd prefer to have D and E for my new partitions, how do I change the letters assigned to the optical drives so that they become available to assign to the partitions?

I am not sure, as I've not built a computer from scratch. I would think that if you unplug the optical drives (unless you need them in order to partition your hard drive), then re-partition.

As I said, I'm not sure, but this seems like it makes sense. I'd at least give it a try and see what happens.

Good luck. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you better.

EDIT:
Seems like both the other answers (as of 5:20 PM) have similar answers, which works.

If you're using XP, go to
Control Panel>Admin Tools>Computer management

then click the disk management link on the explorer type menu. Now you should be able to see all your drives. Right click on the one you want to change the drive letter of and select this option
