My hard drive crashed and refused to boot, so I got a new hard drive and put a fresh copy of Windows XP on it. Now, I can access the old hard drive fine through My Computer, but when I try and go into my Documents and Settings folder to get my files, it says Access Denied. I assume this is because I had a password lock on my account, but is there any way to get around this?

So right now, I think the Windows XP files are corrupted on my hard drive, so I went in to repair the install, but the option is not available. I have, however, unpartitioned space available on this drive. Can I install Windows XP on this unpartitioned space without deleting the data on the other partition?

i want to return a computer to office depot i've had for a couple of weeks, but during the time i've had it, there has been personal info and downloads. i'd like to erase the disk completely clean with drive scrubber. if i do that, can i restore the computer and the software in its original state that i bought it in with the recovery disk that came with it? or would i need to use the recovery disk to erase the disk itself, then do its recovery? i think if it did it, all my personal info wouldn't be erased all the way and still some info recoverable. thanks for any helps

I'm looking to put together a new computer from scratch and have been researching a lot and just wanted to get a few more opinions. I need a very versatile computer for work, video gaming, and video editing.

Suggestions on video cards, cases, motherboards, processors, cooling systems etc would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

When I click on the drive icon a error pops up saying d: is not accessible access is denied. I am running xp home with admin account. I have replaced the ide cable as suggested by the ms help articles. This has happened within the last few weeks. When I checked the eventlog, it reports that the driver detected a controller error on \device\harddisk1\d. My bios is up-to-date as far as I know. My motherboard is a Gigabyte ga7vaxp. Hard drive is a Western Digital 80gb(model 800jb). I need to recover the files on this drive as it has a wedding video.

I can understand the need for vast amounts of storage space on databases and servers, but why do consumers want 500 to 1000 GB of storage for home use? I have a lowly 80GB on mine, and I have a lot of stuff, and still room for more. Ok, I admit I would not have to think about storage at all if I had 200GB, but by the time I use over 150 GB, My computer will be old and it will be time for a new one anyway. So basically I need someone to enlighten me on this: Do people buy 500GB drive and fill it with games, movies and mp3s within one or 2 years? I know it's possible, but is it common?

Each time I attempt to install a program onto my system, the windows install wizard begins to open, then simply closes; there is no error message or anything like that, rather, it just starts & then just stops. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem (other than just giving up and buying another computer, which I'm about to do)? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated; plus, if a suggestion helps me fix the problem, I'll select it as best answer.

Thanx! : )

I was trying to install a new hard drive. I turned it on and smelled burning wire. I shut it off. I checked the whole board to see if any chips burnt out because I have a little experience. Nothing was burnt. I'm thinking either power supply or bios battery? I turn the computer on and nothing comes up on the monitor and I hear this particular series of beeps. 1 beep (pause) 3 beeps (pause) 3 beeps (pause) 1 beep. I thought it was the memory chips too but I checked those out already. It wasn't them. Is there a way to test the power supply? What do you think could be the problem? Your help is appeciated to the fullest! Thank you.

I guess what I'm asking is, how is this better / worse than a regular pc? the case looks to be about the same size as any other desktop computer so I'm a little confused with the "micro" also.
