The frontside bus is the circuit that carries all the information that the CPU processes to the other parts of the computer e.g. RAM or PCI cards.

The speed of the frontside bus is sort of like the speed on a highway. More cars will get to their destination if the speed limit is 100km/h, not 80km/h.

The GHz stands for Gigahertz; 1 GHz is 1000MHz.

One Hertz means that a computer can process 1 cycle per second.

A 1GHz computer can process 1,000,000,000 cycles per second.

That's like you being able to press 1,000,000,000 keys on your keyboard per second. If you could do that, you would be running as fast as your computer.

The average speed for a CPU these days is 2.8Ghz - 3Ghz. I wouldn't go any lower than that.

I would recommend focussing on the amount of RAM you have... buy at LEAST 512MB, although I recommend 1GB... which is 1024MB.

Make sure the processor that you want to buy is supported by your mobo. Processors come in different "socket" sizes, for example, AMD compatible mobos come in sockets 939, AM2, 754. Intel has socket 478 and socket 775. Get the most memory that you can afford, the standard amount of memory for builders is 1GB. That will increase the speed. Keep Win XP free of programs that are not used. Defrag often. Keep spyware, adware, and viruses off of your computer, and it will run at top speed.

FSB is what carrys the data from the CPU to the north bridge and the Memory control hub. The fsb has to be slightly under or the CPU will over heat. Also the CPU has a system clock or called clocks speed per cycle..

All you need to know is, get the fastest that YOU can afford.

If you are changing the processor, chances are the motherboard needs a change too.

If you are changing the processor only, make sure your mobo is compatible with the processor. you may have to pick a slower processor to be compatible with your mobo.

Your pc store would be able to tell you. If you are fixing it yourself, note the make and model number.

Oh yes, get enough of memory, like say 1GB or a minimum of 512MB. If you don't have enough, your winXP is going to slow to a crawl.
