all I can do is tuen it off at the mains, surely that isn't good for my PC's health though?

Turning it off at the mains is not really different from pressing the reboot button all the reboot is is a switch that turns off the power temporarily. No its not good for the PC, defrag the drive afterwards and find out what is causing the crash and solve the problem

Have you tried holding your power button in for three seconds. If that doesn't work then turning off the mains is your only option. It should start again OK.

If your PC as crashed the only thing you can do is press the on/off button down.

hold in the power button. normally for between 5 and 10 seconds, normally 8. keep it held in and the computer will power off. count to 10, and then power it back up.

Turn it off, find and remove the battery for 30. seconds. Put it back in and find the jumper to clear the bios and return it to factory settings. This jumper should be moved for 30. seconds then restored to original position. If the bios is operable it should now boot up. If it doesn't you probably can't save it.

I hold in the power button for an extended period of time and eventually the computer turns off.

It doesn't kill your computer to hold down the power button for 5 sec so it turns off... it may run the disk check utility when you reboot.... but it'll be fine.

You are correct, but with a lot of newer PCs you don't have any other option. Bring back the Reset Button!
